Really think D1 thread is getting hijacked and this should be a topic in its own right.

I think she got her student loans written off or delayed when she took up teaching.  I'm not sure of the details.

That sounds right, James.

Anyhow, how are the masts holding up on the D-One?  Has Andy Rice's mast failure been confirmed as a one off manufacturing problem, or have others had problems?

It is designed to flex off like that to create a nice slot for the kite, however the windier it gets you need to trim the mainsheet for best angle and then apply kicker to give it the correct twist uptop.

I think this picture was a demo in Switzerland.

On the subject of masts (Peaky) I have said it before, my mast held up fine in that BM gust that totalled Andy Rice and I have never had a breakage in all the 25knot winds I have raced in since last September....build fault I reckon.

Right then....I'm off to Torbole.

....case in point....nice picture but mainsheet not in far enough to get good speed, and for sure if you took the picture from another angle you would see the mast bending.

Cheers Tim.  Must be a quality bit of kit to take those loads unstayed!  Sounds like you use leech tension as a sort of backstay?  Best of luck in Torbole.

Rodney reported – Jan 10

On the third downwind leg Andy’s mast failed having broken at the join between the top and bottom section (on inspection we found that the laminates were faulty so this mast will be back to the manufacturer next week).

Luca reported- Jan 10

a look at the first broken mast in the d one short history and thought
that while inserting the stainless steel locating pin on the mast joint laminate
got damaged and that led to the breakage.....peter took pics and they are
already in hand of southern spars to make sure we do have that problem
any more....

Update today

The mast was indeed returned to the manufacturer for closer inspection and Luca’s diagnosis was spot on.  This mast was from a small batch and Devoti were able to replace all masts from this batch within a matter of days including some in the USA.  Problem solved and no more breakages  thanks to excellent support from the mast manufacturers.

The first of our new demo boats arrives soon - new deck, white with carbon insets

If you look at this dude in a D-One he's clearly pinning for speed; it looks a tad overpowered, but I bet it's still quick VMG:

That is true....700 sailors "learning the ropes" at our club do it and then they can't stand on the wings.

Sheet in, heat up and bear off.

Maybe it's because 'I is better than you!!'

Truthfully: The only secret that there was on that day, was
the 20+ knts of breeze and so it had no other choice other
that to fill as i was heading dead down wind.... lol

I think one of the things people new to assy single handed sailing do is to forget about the main downwind leaving on the shroud after the hoist.

This then proceeds to make their life much harder ... trimming the main is key to balancing the boat and going fast. Stens K16 DVD has some good coverage on this point.
