But boxy allows you to build from sheets of foam sandwich that you couldn't do with a rounded hull. Lighter and stiffer. Also if you use cats as an example they are all boxier now, the round ones like the original mondeo have gone

The boom being designed not to bang beginners' heads seems like a reasonable thing to do? Wouldn't surprise me at all that as the class becomes more racy, people discover it goes better with shed loads of kicker on. At that point, the boom might still be at a height you don't have to limbo to get under it.

Cheaply, you mean? We manage foam in a rounded hull on the 3k - just needs a bit of effort and heat. I'm not saying that there's a problem hydrodynamically either, just talking aesthetics, esp. as regards non-sailors/beginners. A cocked up boom looks awful too to my eyes. A droopy boom looks like you know what you're doing with the kicker! Again, aerodynamically a cocked up boom is not a problem but the gooseneck needs to be much lower to be any improvement on the Laser.

From the side the hull looks a bit like an Ok - and that looks great with a low boom

Whoa there! You can build pretty much any shape using foam sandwich. Most boats (inc several in the RS range) are built using contour foam - ie foam that is scored so that it can adapt to compound curvature. These boats, when hand built, have the foam installed on a thickened epoxy foam mix over the laminate which fills the scoring in a nice light robust manner. Very similar panel weights to flat sheet. If chosing a cheaper manufacturing method like infusion or rtm, you have to omit buttering the core as you are bagging or installing all Laminate and core "dry", and if using contour foam, neat resin fills the kerfs, and at 1200kg/m3 that adds up. Hence if you design like a goslow you can use flat sheet with no kerfs which if fitted well, don't have too much interstitial resin, as long as you can accept the compromises that brings. You could also heat form flat sheets to get around some compound curvature, or strip plank it (bead and cove) particularly on male moulded boats. Both labour intensive. Dan |

Yes, even if both that and the Aero have the mast unfashionably far forward.

Is it 1956, with people complaining about these boats with chines rather than proper round bottoms?

Aesthetic values do change with time, but there seem to be some absolutes. I don't suppose the list of top-rated classic paintings has changed much since the 50's.
Most people still regard a Dragon as an attractive-looking boat, whereas the Star...

I don't think anyone would accuse me of being much of a phanbuoy of the Aero, certainly not the big rig I'd need to get one planing upwind- but given the choice at 12-14 years old, I would have picked the Aero over the 4.7 everyday....
but then I'm not like the majority of sailors about these things who seem so ready to plonk a smaller rig on a large platform.... even the 49erFX was, imho, a massive compromise compared to a purpose built, womens-specific lighter weight hull. But hey, wtf do I know, other than the girls wanted a girlie version of the boys boat, rather than something that was faster, cooler and designed for the task in hand. I hope the Aero 5 succeeds where the Byte and Byte CII could not.

So you reckon that the Aero was designed for the 5 rig rather than the 7 or 9?
