We do have a circuit, but it's been pretty-much abandoned this year due to either work-reated, money-related, or family-related problems for a number of the teams. So we've just been turning-up at the odd event or two (like Weymouth Regatta) and having a hoon around.

As far as "where do we sail them", ideally on the sea with some waves and a big course (hence we like places like Weymouth and Torquay).

49ers never look to be going all that fast - but clearly are.

I was waiting for an Albacore to appear - planing past them.

I'm not talking about it being "nose-up". It's simply not fully planing.

There's no air under that hull at all. Semi-planing yes, but full "24-knot" planing, NO.

Seiko gave them 1500 big ones each so they must have been convinced by the 25 knots speed. Therefore, Bob the corollary of your remark is that the 49er does not fully plane, even at 24 knots. Does that matter? If the bows don't lift as far as some other dinghies, how can one say that the hull is not fully planing? As far as I can understand, what is happening is that the hull is exceeding its (theoretical) speed for displacement sailing. To say anything else is just pure MMM (male member measurement).

P.S. I've had a good 18 knots out of my 59er and I wansn't even trying. The bow doesn't lift up high in flat water, 'cos the boat's hull doesn't baulk or squat ( =linear drag curve).

(Oops, can opened, worms everywhere).

Yeah, whatever. Don't forget though that when a hull fully planes, the bow actually drops, so if there were fuly on-it, they'd both be standing right at the back with the hull sitting flat on top of the water (hich it is not).

I still don't think it looks anything like as fast as 24kts, just look at how tightly pinned-in the kite is. If it was breezy enough to do that kind of speed, they'd be sailing much more free, but anyway if that's as exciting as a 49er gets when it's flat-out at 24kts, you can keep it.

There's probably something in that. Are some boats more
settled at speed than others? I know full well we've sailed
faster in our 4K than the Vago but the Vago made more of a
song and dance about it and felt faster. Something about it
leaping and the deck being awash with foam squirting out of
the centerboard slot. Christ the 4000 doesn't even hum
anymore.

Firefly doing, what, 8 knots - no real idea of top speed? But flat out with a rounded, short, wobbly hull feels damn quick, with spray everywhere.

Christ $1500 each, i need to get someone in our saftey boat
running at 3/4 speed next to me and shout well were doing
25 knots so they must be 24!!! That water looks bloody
flat and not really that windy!

Not all boats are designed to plane on the transom. Not all boats plane with
the bow in the air either. That posture is often inefficient, though trimming
the bow down a bit can lead to mine shaft. That was clear in China. The boat
is quite clearly planing, and quite clearly going very fast. How hard you have
to trim, is dependent on the apparent wind, so faster you go, tighter it gets.
