A friend's B14 was involved in such a w-w/l-w incident with an MPS, the B14 beating and the MPS sailing downwind.

The MPS sailor ended up near the B14 spreaders and the B14 crew in hospital after being hit by the MPS' bowsprit. An inch or two different and he'd have been dead with a broken spine.

I really don't see an easy answer. It's hard to keep looking nearly directly behind you when sailing upwind, and if the wind is steady the downwind guy doesn't have much opportunity to move the boat around to look out each side...

It's a learning exercise and people tend to adopt a common sense approach. I was sailing upwind in the MPS nationals and sailed straight into the leeward blind spot of a boat coming downwind. Fortunately he saw me and fortunately for both, a gust didn't come through at exactly the same time...

We chatted about it afterwards (not a lecture or a argument, simple advice) and he informed me of the common practice for boats going upwind to keep clear of those coming down. Letting through port boats when on starboard, not being an 'arse' about windward boats etc I'm not sure if the same courtesy applies in other asymmetric classes, but it just goes to show the right attitude on the race course is equally important to our safety as the 'rules'.

Jason, looks like you needed a bit more rig tension!

Its less than we used to run! I remember most of the fleet heading for the beach at the country club at Grafham Inlands one year to pull more on when the wind got up, as loose windward shrouds make the boat very wallowy upwind. Anyway videos look great, and it was good to see a decnet number of 600s on the water.

Loose windward shroud.  Wow, what's holding the mast up?

the reason its flapping like that is because yes the rig tension is not tight bet secondly i am taking most of the rig tension on my trapeze wire as soon as i come of the wire the wind ward shroud will became tought again its just the best setting on the 600 before you go on the water you want to hook on the wire and if the windward shroud just goes floppy you know you got the rig tension right but if you you are going out in a lumpy sea then obviously you pull a little more on  Wink

Ah yes, obvious now you say that.

Actually, I should have known better. I rigged my Jacksnipe loose (when it was the fashion in Snipes) - gave my crew some alarming moments when the mast lurched to windward in lulls. It was very, very loose, mind!

the less rig tension apparently the faster it is but!!! i ahve been on flat water with next to no tension on in about 12knots and you can feel the boat dancing around the rig underneath so i go with what i feels best

i remember i was at pyfleet week at brightling sea a few years back i was sailing a fireball in the fast handicap fleet but in the afternoons had nothing really to do apart from drink so in my quest to save so beer tokens (money) i borrowed a newish blaze rigged it it was pretty lumpy and windy cranked the tension on! the owner came over and said what you doing in horror !,then he let all the tension off and said you dont need any tension i laughed went sailing and the rig was just flopping around which was weird but fast
