Its in my mind at the moment because I'm currently sorting out next year's personal handicaps and its proving one hell of a job this year because there's been a huge amount of boat swapping, demo boats and so on. I've got 10 Sailwave series that can't readily be combined because they use different fleet options for staggered starts and so on, and in each series there are getting on for a dozen people who have used different boats, so I have to separate each series score into separate results for each class for those people. Then I need to aggregate all those results into my personal handicap spreadsheet.

It seems to get worse each year. Its the multiple boats/boat swapping that really kills it. If only Sailwave had a sort of reverse alias that allowed us to combine separate entries into a single series points score... I think that allowing boat swapping is the right thing for the sailors, but its a damn nightmare for this administrator. So the possibility of easier ways to do things is well in my mind!

Strikes me if you won't have boats banded then at least sailors should be in the name of ease of application, sort of level system, I'd been thinking of it early.

Level 1 International Olympic & Multinational Worlds champion/ medalist 0
Level 2 Multiple National Level Winner, Pro Sailor say   +5
Level 3 Occasional Winner, class champion      +10
Level 4 Top Ten Performer at Open National Level, frequent Club Champion +15
Level 5 Top Twenty Performer at National or Open Level, occasional Club Race winner +20
Level 6 Mid fleet Intermediate top 10 club sailor +25
Level 7 Lower level fleet sailor average club middle to rear +30
Level 8 Entry Level Club Racer +40

Or something along those lines worked out a bit more mathematically

that's a lot of admin work there woodburner, and also open to subjective manipulation if you don't have a defined set of rules as to what percentage "occasional winner" requires for example.

you need less admin and a set of extremely defined rules that apply to everyone for it to work.

Incidentally IME Level 4 to Level 8 is going to be around 20% difference in elapsed time.

In my clubs "most improved" personal handicap system we do indeed band people. We have 6 bands. Band 0 sailors average 100-105% of racewinners corrected time, Band 1 sailors average 105-110% and so on. If you're in Band 1 you get Standard PY +5% and so on.

I have spent years convincing people of my sailing incompetence. One day when my new number is sufficiently advantageous I will leap out and obliterate all comers! Unless I die first of course....

I know I am rubbish, the figures tell me I am rubbish, why do I want a personal handicap to tell everyone else I am rubbish?

If I beat that fat bugger in the club Laser it is enough for me........In fact if I was racing on my personal handicap and won I would collect a silver cup for beating said fat bloke?

If you do an "best improver" system like we do then it provides a nice milestone for people to measure improvement. Improving faster than anyone else in the club certainly seems like an achievement that should be celebrated

And even a Golf handicap reflects a day you sailed far better than you usually do.
