A good idea would be not to hash one up for the Dinghy Show. Rooster project x seems to have failed/delayed for commercial reasons but its cause was not enhanced by the development hack shown to the public.

Yes, RS are fairly brave showing this prototype, given some of the comments above, which read as though only the pictures have been looked at - maybe Martin's writing was too hard to read?
A lash up at the Dinghy Show would be a bad move. But then they were pushed into a corner on this - better to get their own shots of it out, not even worse ones taken on a phone from 50 yards. I shall watch the progress with interest, have a go when there is a chance, and compare and contrast with Lightnings, Lasers & all the other singlehanders I've been fortunate enough to own or sail. |

I do wonder what some of you folks find so hard to understand about the phrase "development prototype"? It would be quite astonishing if there were nothing wrong with a prototype, that is, after all, the reason for building it.

Looks interesting. I like the idea of an uncluttered cockpit and control lines being kept out of the way.
In reality they may need to be led further back to allow adjustment, possibly continuous lines too. As Martin has said this is very early days and at the moment it is just a test bed. If they can price the new thing right (i.e. less than a new Laser) and it is viable i can see it gaining traction. Having chines it looks like it may solve some of the bad habits of the Laser. I would like to see a rear bridle option for sheeting though. This allows much finer control of the leech tension (which is usually key for an unstayed rig). Just my 2p as always....

I also used to have a solution, which is a great boat. This does look similar, although a little slimmer. Having been a laser sailor too I think this does look interesting. I agree with Rupert about waterline length. This was a weakness of the Solution. I would have also modified the planing surface. The very wide flat stern although useful for stability is draggy in the light. The Solution also lacks freeboard. The target market was a more refined single hander, which was only a little more than a laser. Had there been more knee room it would have attracted more of the Solo market. I hope the use of a carbon mast with a soft tip may get away from so much need to rake the rig, which with a relatively stiff aluminium section was a must on the Solutuon.
So if a little longer and a little deeper and a little more light wind performance and it will be a winner. Not thinner. Andy |

To get to the claimed weights it will be wet lay epoxy foam sandwich - infusion on something this size will add between 5 and 10kg on something this size. With carbon spars they will not be able to get close to laser price unless they adopt very un-RS profit margins.
Either that or get to close to Laser price at 45 or 50 kg hull weight at lower tech / labour cost. |

It is a fact Rupert that the market is well covered by existing classes but we all feel that no one has quite got it right, perhaps there is no universal boat for all? Lightning suits me (and you), Phantom suits my Fat Friend and Byte suits the boy. If I were 45 years younger I would be leaning sexilly against an RS 300 in skin tight Zhik. I love the 'image' of that boat. Perhaps the way to achieve market success is to produce a boat that hits most spots but has some distinctive design feature that raises it above the competition. How about RS Red Bull Sailing......all logo'd up like an F1 car? Logos and image seem so important now days but carbon is so outre these days.

So there is only really one thing to be done here, it has to go head to head with a Laser and win on most points of sailing (certainly up wind and down) then it simply applies the PY that the Sailjiuce mob gave the Laser 1115 was it, and you have the perfect recipe for success.

If the deck is an early proto perhaps a photograph of the underneath would have been more useful?
All these middle of the road modern singlehanders look much the same though. It's the weight or lack of it that makes it interesting.
