Back off the tension, multi release cleats, unclip in advance of tricky bits.

Funnily enough I've always found that if i am desperate enough, I can unclip normal cleats in just about any direction...

I agree, SPD's on mountain bikes are almost more useful than on road bikes. When the going gets bumpy it is sometimes the only way to stay attached to the bike at speed!

When I first started I loosened mine off completely so that I could get my feet out really easily. I soon wound them back up to a reasonable tension so that I wasn't unclipping by mistake.

In a big stack, I have never stayed attached to the bike. Normally landing a few feet in front of the bike in the middle of the path so don't be frightened about causing yourself any real harm. (well no more than falling off a bike at speed with normal pedals anyway).

I find the majority of fallings off happen at low speed or very nearly stationary. Eg. You casually come to stop, slowly take your foot off the pedal, then remember sh!t sh!t sh!t...

Keeping your pedals clean and cleats free from mud and crap also helps. Earlier in the year I went to CwmCarn for the day and had real pedal issues (i was using a pair of old Scott spds as I wore out the bearings on my Ritcheys) and I fell off probably 5 times in the snow. As soon as I got home I ordered a pair of budget Shimano's and not had a single problem since.

Not forgetting plan whatever-number-we-are-on-now and getting platform SPDs so you can be unclipped for the sketchy bits and clipped in for the rest.

multi release cleats and backing off the tension should solve  the problems. Smile

if this does not work, think about changing to time atac pedals. there great!

hey guys, out riding today on our road bikes and my mate went into the back of me sending us both flying. As a result my back wheel is totally bent out of shape (big time). Anyone have a 2nd hand set of rear (or both) wheels for sale. The cheaper the better.

Alternatively does anyone know where the cheapest place would be to get a replacement.

Get a handbuilt one from your local dusty bike shop etc. etc. etc....

Having got that out of the way, wiggle, chain reaction cycles, or probikekit.

Just bought a new bike (Giant)-last one 25 years old. And some clothing. I thought Reynolds 531 was the mutt's nuts-now it's ali or carbon...Chamois I thought was for rubbing on the car-not my gentleman's undercarriage! Disc brakes-fantastic.
Anyone want to buy a 1985 Claud Butler Panache-complete with tread-driven dynamo, Brooks leather saddle, only 12 gears. How did we get by! Cycling's not the same now.
