Any reason why they didn't do medal races in the harbour?

They lost it by being suckered in to a gybing duel. The Aussies didn't complete their penalty because theyby did only the first part of the single turn (the tack), and forgetting to do the gybe.

ESP wins the Gold - seems like AUS lost it by the wipeout in race 3 and the penalty in race 5

agreed - it would have been much more fun to watch the 470 medal races in today's conditions.

Did you see the AUS wipeout, where the skipper fell out of the boat? I guess the Aussies can swim after all !

Looking at the conditions in the Australia vs Spain match race - what a pity the 470 races weren't today! Maybe less so for the 49er's, unless we wanted to feed GRF's Schadenfreude...

A rather misused term in some club names, I agree.  Confused

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Its an interesting point that the sailing in the medal race on the Nothe course is quite close to what a lot of UK sailors are familiar with. Which means that your corinthian club sailor would stand a chance of competing against the professionals in such a format (whereas in 25knots of breeze sailing in the bay he would get hammered!) So it follows that if we choose the right venues for the games we don't need to spend all this money on professionals. We just need to drag in some good club sailors from the nearest puddle and-job done! I suspect enterprise or national 12 sailors would be a good place to start, they seem to be good at that sort of thing.

One of the things that concrns me with these elite -paid- squads; is not that they are paid; I am not concerned with wether they just scrape by or live a life of subsidised luxury; but what happens when they either retire from full time sport or they get dropped from the squads, not many in sailing seem to have another life or career. This is a human tragedy in the making and in many cases the evictees from the squads (from Oppies upwards.) then leave the sport which is another tragedy.
There has to be a way!
