My aim is to make a round the cans racer, recognise that with kite only used on w/l legs that 12 is an absolute scream on reaches (we love overtaking the 200's when they have their kits up and are struggling!)so D-one....not my plan at all! Having sailed a 100 I was disappointed with it not being able to go round the cans and so hence my project. 12 is so sensitive to sail and an absolute joy that I want to take that experience and try and match it in a single hander!

Project so far!:

Looks great Jeremy, should be fantastic fun!

The 12's that are out aren't up to date, so are probebly nearer to the handicap than a modern 12, but yes, on a quiet Wednesday night they will be fantastically quick - but then so will the Firefly. Why should people who decide to sail boats that are obviously crap in light winds on a small lake expect to do well on handicap?!

fair point!
Our main 12 is a 12yr old feeling foolish, we also have a DCB, numinous, 2 crusaders, design 8 and an annie apple at the club. Have to say that the DCB is in another league (but they are also multiple national champs), would be good to inherit the multiple handicaps recommended by the 12 class at the club so the older boats get more chance, thereby encouraging people not to have to spend a fortune on a boat to have fun and race with some chance.

Another thread altogether i suspect, but most single handed kite boats are going to be a real pain on a club round the cans course.  I guess the secret is to have a boat that's quick on all point of sailing; Upwind, Down and reaching.

I don't think its all about being quick, I'm not intersted in making a stupidly quick boat, I want to build one that will be sensitive and enjoyable to sail, be good particularly on reaches (round the cans), but will also give you great adrenaline moments... Smile
My favourite thing about the 12 is that you have to react bl**dy quickly and yet it can still throw you out the side when it feels like it... keeps you on your toes! Confused

I can't agree with the 100 being poor rtc, I've managed to do quite well this year in my first season.
when I was doing the club py return, my h cap for wed evening rtc was around 950 for a py ;)

Alex, I'm not saying it is poor, just not what I was expecting, I enjoyed sailing it but it is not really suitable to our pond..

absolutely- this is my experience too... great circuit/handicap w/l boat though and of course, if you're racing other (proper) asymmetrics then you're equally unsuited to the RTC course.

I suspect a D-One is better RTC, the bigger main means it will actually go well in unarig mode (I ate humble pie after watching them unarig at Draycote last year), but I really don't 'need' to spend £10k on a toy only I can use, no matter how well built it might be and how much I might be 'want' to give one a go. That's a change in spending culture and value judgements... the other thread deals with this, so no need to go O/T.

I love what you're doing here Jeremy, exactly what I'd like to do! Please keep us posted, maybe use this thread now it's started???
