All well sailed boats sail to their apparent wind.  Why would you sail to wind that is un-apparent? Wink

So how`s it going with the old land skiff then, Photo`s look good, very shallow water.

I always thought that the word "skiff" as used by the Aussies was describing a class of boat (18, 16, 12 etc) rather than a design type - after all, the boats as they were years ago look nothing like the boats now. When did Sydney harbour 18 footers become 18 foot skiffs, anyway?

If it is now describing a design type, then it is simply a subset of dinghy, very much like "scow" is for describing Fireballs or Toppers, boats which have very little in common apart from the thinking behind the design of the bow.

IMHO...

If it planes upwind...
At least 2/3 of the crew have the ability to trapeze...
It carries a large assymmetric...

...then it's probably a modern skiff.

Purists would say in addition if it has no halyards, the crew can carry it, it has no sail numbers, and it can trace it's history back to Syndey Harbour working boats, then it's a proper skiff.  Oh, and what Jim says about bruises.

In short, 12/16/18 definitely, 14/Cherub possibly, 49er/800/29er XX marginal, Musto/700 even more marginal, 29er/Buzz/500 no way Jose.

It's a hard thing to understand, I think we need a Top Gear Skiff Wall, or possibly a "Beauskiff Scale" to make it easier...

BSKF12, "The multiple rigs are made of carbon, and the lightweight craft is carried to the water by a team of suncream wearing gorillas.  The water is littered with the sight of 20knot pitchpoles and much swearing.  The air is fileld with constant bad language and the bar is totally covered in foam from spilt lager"

BSKF1, "Gelcoat, halyards, RYA badges and Zhik/Rooster kit is in abundance.  Spares are purchased online at much inflated prices.  Bullsh*t rises vertically".

Hope this helps Wink

Is this not really a 'bitter' v 'lager' debate ?   .... and as about as enlightening.  Ask GRF what he drinks as well while you are at it ...

The landskiff is going well thanx, apart from the total population of the UK mounting a pitch invasion last week making landskiff sailing far to dangerous, so no sailing last weekend. This weekend looks better.

As for apparent wind, yes left out the word 'generates' sorry.

Skiff noun> a small light boat. 16c from the french 'esquif' according to the chambers 21st century dictionary. Big smile .
Its got nothing to do with your vmg or apparent wind, its been b**tardised to mean anything similar or congruent to an 18fter. i.e fast asymetrics, although the local shoot use skiffs to row out on the river to shoot stuff known locally as rowing skiffs.

In SydneyAustralia the term Skiff was used for a number of racing classes (sizes from 6ft to 23ft have existed). These were originally heavily crewed and canvassed boats that were relatively short for the canvas and crew carried. This style of boat is still active in the form of Historical 10 foot and 18 foot classes. The Skiff classes developed to become much lighter and faster with relatively smaller (but still very large by any other standards) rigs and smaller crews. 12ft Skiff16ft Skiff and 18ft Skiff classes are raced in that form. With two crew on the 12 footer and three on the 16 and 18 these are still heavily crewed boats for their size.

Because the modern 18s have such a high profile the term skiff is also used to refer to other high performance sailing dinghy classes featuring asymmetrical spinnaker and trapeze which have been strongly influenced by modern skiffs. Examples include: Cherub SkiffInternational 14 , 29er29erXX49er and Musto Performance Skiff. These boats tend to be less heavily crewed in relation to their length than the traditional Australian Skiff Classes.
