Well I'll say this, my mate in his Phantom, never once beat me when I raced the Blaze, wish I could say the same since I've been in the RS.

I can't say I found it particularly difficult to tack, I did have that off boom sheeting but what difference does that make? And now that big bloke who bought it off me, who is a proper sailor, ex SI and all, he hasn't looked back and I doubt he and the Phantom are even on the same part of the course once a few minutes after the start gun have passed.

I mean it's all very well lauding the boat, but frankly everything the Phantom had, which was pretty much it's favorable PY, has now passed to the Blaze, which at 1046 in Epoxy is looking very appealing compared to 1030, if handicaps are part of the reason one buys a Phantom and weight carrying? The Blaze is still equal to that task.

Hi Maxi

I assume you refer to the Beastie .... you must have been in that other 50% then.  Well l was not late for the start you know ... 'they' set Halo's off after the Phantoms,  based on the 'honest john' suggested PN we gave them .... maybe this year then as I think a Halo and a Phantom will be sharing the same start time at most pursuit events from now  !! Wink

Mike L.

PS ...but I probably will not be using a Halo this time round for the Beastie if I do make it - I'm an inadaquate 83kg after all.  I'd probably leave it to a proper 'heavy' as I would have been a lot faster last year with a Blaze rig in that wind.  My mistake ...  But don't you want to try one ?

Hi Simon

We are going way off the thread now !!  .... If you refer to Icon then I/we are planning a number of runs at various locations now and that may well include the Beastie ... if the club will have us etc and provided a suitable crew is available.   In fact is there a local scratch crew available perhaps ?  Tasar experienced crew or similar is fine - the only unusual thing might be the 'dangle' jib pole - but thats just easy ...

I've raced with just 130kg in the boat and done it with at least 185kg ....  but quite happy with a combination somewhere in the middle - 2 x 'traditional' Phantom (or now Halo) sailers might struggle a bit though !    Names etc to ....

Mike L

PS - And if 'dogs on chains' should start to look worried .... well the Blaze might just end up on the combi instead !

More luck than judgement on my part Mike. I have nothing against broadening my horzions more and the Halo does look good. Can't be that difficult can it???? Anyway I think that you are likely to beat me this year, we've got an open on the saturday there and not sure if its windy that with my lack of fitness I'll stand a chance of my legs surviving, that and Coastbusters the night before for Beastie beer and curry!
I love the Phantom and the folks sailing them and the reason for buying was not to win handicap events iGRF, it suited my lard. I am not adverse to sailing anything, I've sailed RS300, Laser, Topper, Marauder and Mirrors, albeit the last four a long time ago.
Both classes have their merits and has been said before we hijacked it for banter reasons, it is best to try one of each if you can. I was hoping that Ruscoe would chip in like he normally does as he had a Phantom for a week or two before he found out he couldn't get under the boom, and he sails on a river
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Maxi

Well we share sailing ... in our respective pasts,  300's. Lasers, Mirrors and even Marauder although they were M14's when my father built one before Noah took up sailing.  Might get down to Beastie country on the Saturday anyway to set up .... where do you lot go for beer & curry down there then ?

I guess it depends how big your river is, everyone seems to be assuming it is a small river a bit like the ones at the top of the Norfolk Broads but it could be a wider one like the Medway at Wilsonian, these 2 different venues would mean a different boat, so how big is your river?

I would suggest it's somewhere between the two (both in size and geographically:) )

the sailing club can be seen in the top left hand corner of the attached link.

I think I'm leaning towards a Blaze which I can then update to a Halo as I improve, but the next think is to o and sail some boats :)

I assume you are only looking for a single-hander but how do you think the X1 would fare on your waters?
I like to take pictures of sailing, but I'd rather be sailing!
