505's have had world several champs on that bit of the Baltic recently. Both at Travemunde and at Warnemunde in the past 20 yrs (and the FD's too, I think about 4/5 yrs ago at Warnemunde). Great venues - we think. Think that Ian Barker won the 92 worlds there. Sailing tends to be rather Hayling-esque. Chop rather than Weymouth /Lyme Regis. And tends to have that Solent-ish speed of wind pattern (just my view here). Both these venues are preferred to Kiel by the British fleet......then again we don't have camper vans, and we do like our creature comforts...!!

Would it be pedantic to point out that gusts of 34 to 40 knots do not a Force 8 make!
Beaufort indicates average wind speeds over a period of time. Which is not to say that gusts that strong can be quite hairy. Gordon |

Yes. Just like the Bloody Mary was generally 15 knots....but it is the 25kn gusts that will stick in my mind! Travemunde; Expect anything wind & waves wise, like UK summer. In my experience during a week you will experience a big downpour/storm, take good waterproofs and make sure your tent is up to it. Fantasic carnaval atmoshphere on shore at Travemunde week but take straws to get through the froth. |

When we had Force 8 in 2007 they kept all the dinghies on the beach. When the first keel boat with a broken mast came back in no one doubted that it was a good decision by the race committee. ( O.k., maybe beside the few RS400 crews that actually launched in the morning but were send back right away.) Although they clean the beach every morning I have never seen someone dredging the bay from weed. You pick some up while launching but we never had problems on the race courses. The special thing about Travemünder Woche really is the party. Something like Oktoberfest and a huge sailing week at the same time at the same place. Beer and music are better than Oktoberfest, though. It is a huge event, you need to look after your stuff so it does not "find a new owner". Some say the day the 420's are leaving is the most critical day... Edited by skslr |
