Back in the 1960s there used to be a singlehanded race during the Cherub Nationals, pole kites and all! I have sailed singlehanded with the pole kite - and it was a serious pole on the Cherub - as can be seen by this mid 70s photo of another forum participant. The corners and edges could be interesting...

Hmm lol um it would be interesting to try.............there is the single trapeze option that Sunsail use so as los as you were not too powered up you should be able to sail it singly i guess.

The extreme length of the cherub pole is more obvious in this pic :

The pole is on the forestay in the pic, the length of pole inside the forestay is only 1/3 of it's overall length - leading to interesting leverage problems in a bad gybe!

I recall that the more old-fashioned boats of that era had a pole that just about reached past the luff of the jib eg FD, Merlin rocket, hornet. The Hornet used to have the same length pole as a Mirror!

I have sailed 800's single handed very nice until the wind get up but I am 14 stone. I do prefer doing it with the twin trap version though as the wire is more accessable. Also you have to use the kite just be prepared to bare away lots. A useful tip to keeping the tiler in the middle while hoisting/dropping the kite is to tie it loosely in place with bungie. You can still helm without a problem and it means the extension can be kept out the way over the back of the boat.

So what's happening seems to be,

RS have designed the Vareo as a 1 or 2 up boat with spin,
Laser have designed the Vago for 1 or 2 up (with trapeze and spin)
If you a chellenge and want serious racing go for Musto Skiff or RS 600/700

OR push the limits with singlehanded sailing a 2 up boat.

My only problem is sorting the PN issue when club racing 1 up.
This is the only way to really see how well these boats can be adapted to solo sailing and to see how well they can be sailed one up in a variety of wind conditions.

I'm trying to encourage a provisional Buzz singlehanded trial PN and need ideas for how to go about this. http://www.writinginthesky.net/buzz/pn.htm

Surely there must be loads of Laser 3000 sailors out there who solo sail too?
What do you lot do?
