I'd also agree. I've actually had the experience you would get if you contemplated either the RS700 or MPS, both of which have been tried and dropped by lots of sailors far more experienced than you or I. I restored my confidence and went on to 'get the bug' with an L3000, a couple of lads I then sold it on to and who have since bought the V3000 in a relatively short time have now become regular winning club racers as well, with even greater future aspirations. You can learn all the basics, plus single hand trapezing, it's a spirited little boat, especially in a breeze and not unlike the L2000 you're familiar with. Not the most competitive boat in its L version in light winds, but that's the time to single hand it. |

Hi
Thanks for all the replies. I don't think I'm up to something as extreme as an RS700 - if nothing else, family commitments mean I don't have that much time dedicate to sailing, so I want something relatively easy. The Vareo is still an option, but only if I kept the L2000 as well. This is a possibility but there are obvious advantages in not having an extra boat (cost, storage, insurance etc). The V3000 looks interesting. How does it perform as a single-hander? Are there issues in buying a little-known boat from a small manufacturer? Why so much negative talk about the Vago? I wouldn't have thought Laser would develop a bad boat. Cheers Phil |

i think you would need to be fairly large to keep it flat, and i suspect the jib and kite layouts would be significantly less than ideal for single handing.

horribly balanced without the jib on, kite halyard etc are right at the front so its really not ideal. anyway, why get a 500 when he could get a vareo for much less money? |

We followed a vago on a trailor on the way to the Island race, couldn't for
the life of me work out what it was. It looked exactly what we wanted, single trapeze, retracting plate, nice size big enough to take our weight, bigger than the RS500, I had to ask them what it was. Then they told me and I lost interest straight away. Why is that? The polyethylene would make it ideal for the ravages of our shingle beach. Well the reason is simply weight, they're too damn heavy. Not so heavy not to beat us on handicap in the race it transpired so it can't be that bad. So the answer is 'perception' some people have a bad perception of boats built out of polyethylene, myself included. But i bet those guys enjoyed their race every bit as much as we did, so what the heck? Edited by G.R.F. |

Not nice. Maybe with the standard rig, but not with the XL. The V3000 would be better imho. |

At 69kg the Vago doesn't seem overly heavy compared to similar GRP boats.
I have to admit, though, the plastic doesn't look good compared to GRP. But then people used to say that about GRP compared to wood... |

i have sailed a vago once in about a force5 at plas menai with wind against a 4knot tide. needless to say it was huge fun but at some points when wave jumping it did feel a bit floppy. personally wouldnt have on because i prefer the 'on the edge' feeling. but they are good tough boats with pretty reasonable performance....

Quite a few 3000 owners enjoy sailing their boats singlehanded. Read about it on five pages of the 3000 forum, here: http://www.3000class.org.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=217 If you want a demo in a 3000, e-mail info@3000class.org.uk and we'll sort something out for you.. |
