why is there so much difference between cheap musto skiffs (£4300 is the cheapest i saw) and cheap rs700's - £2500. i mean it obviouly depends on the kit included but why have the 700's depreciated so much compared to the skiff? they are both about the same age arent they? or are there problems cropping up with early 700's now? tom |

Price is a lot more to do with demand than the actual condition and quality of the kit, and the Musto is certainly very fashionable at the moment. One may or may not be better built and longer lasting than the other, but it won't necessarlly be reflected in the price you can buy one for.

TT is right, the MPS class comes across as welcoming and has a very interesting website and are popular at the moment. But if like me you want your first asymetric skiff to learn on, then £2.5k for a 700 makes sense. Mine came with 2 kites, good main and I reckon to spend £150-200 to be fully pimped. It shouldnt be a dog for that money. Other threads have argued which is the better boat, so wont start that again! Looking forward to a day with 10kts of breeze and warm sunshine so I can practise!

not looking to bring that argumentup agian paul (?). i have been looking at the two classes over the past few years as something i might end up moving into (bit worried about the rs300 and sailing with bent knee hiking all the time - i only have 2 knees and they have to last a whole life) the 700's are very cheap atm but are they still selling and do they have a good racing circuit? is this going to be like what happened with the 600 and prices will soar again in a years time from now? paul, what made you choose the 700 over the musto (excluding the price) |

This is a little interesting since I'm looking for an MPS. With regard to the price diferrence it's not that great. Tom, you took one extreme - the cheapest. Looking at the 700's they are cheaper but for the same boat ie the same build year, the MPS are between £500-£800 more expensive. A 2006 700 is up for £5,2K, I viewed a 2006 Musto for £5.9K at the weekend. Having a look at the other 700's the price difference is also about the same when compared to other Mustos that have come and gone. I think the reasons why the Musto seems so much more expensive at the moment is because most of the ones for sale are very new where as the 700's for sale are older. |

What about the fact that Mustos are built by ovingtons- renowned for well constructed boats....
RS doesn't have quite the same reputation... |

Didnt want a new boat while learning, wont be doing the circuit yet and the 700 has simlilar bang to the MPS for much less bucks. |

so is the 700 an older design then? as a result the cheapest boats are much older? the older musto's seem to be like rs300's to get hold of. i also noted that all the musto's advertised (bar one) only had one set of sails wheras the 700's often had 2. the best i could come up with was that with a fully battened main the musto sail flogged less and so lasted better over time(?) |

From memory Tom, the Musto is actually the older design, its just that it took longer to really get any sales going.
Regarding sails the 700 mains last pretty well, my current main is 3 and a half years old now and just starting to look tatty due to flogging. The Musto sails dont flog so much so yes the main bulk of the sail lasts longer but, being a fully battened main the batten pocket to boltrope join will need regular maintenance. RS boats, especially the singlehanders seem to go through these dips after about 6-7years, and then seem to recover slightly, the musto seems to have remained stable, partly because the demand is high, the supply of secondhand boats is not so great, and its now an official international class. Still they both fulfill the same market, and apart from the well documented intricacies of each boat they are for all intense purposes the same, so if you get a good deal on a 700 buy one, they are great fun and I would certainly rate mine as the best boat I have ever owned as a total package. (The 49er was the best boat to sail that I have ever owned but there were just too many issues with sailing it off a lee shore, and crew etc. etc.) |
