....tis a common problem with forums, not being able to sort out the good info from the bad. It takes time on a forum to work out who is giving out good info and who isn't. The occasional visitor looking for info is not going to be able to discriminate.

Some way of knowing how good the info is would be helpfull and possible...idea of the top of my head.....how about a  signature template stating what you sail, how long for and how good at it you are, ie open event finishing positions. also RYA qualifications.

This wouldn't be foolproof but would be a step in the right direction. This forum has a good reputation but could be made better IMO

...oh and the Laser II has a massive pole

To be honest I've always thoiught the biggest objection was that certain companies seem to produce slightly different versions of the same thing year in year, diluting the customer base and preventing good class racing.

Of course there will always be some who will fall for the latest marketing technique, and as a newbie you are more likely than most to buy this years must have starter boat only to find it obsolete within a few years with a vastly reduced secondhand market and no CA or race circuit.

Um, I could lie. Oh by the way I won the Laser open at BLYM ( ) but 3 other people on here know the truth!

TBH one day you could be pants sailing, other days you could be great. I don;t think it will work really as there is no way of telling the truth!

I think if someone told a porky about race results on this forum they would be sussed in about 30 seconds flat.

and as I said, it's not foolproof..even expert advice is only an opinion and the advice taker needs to be aware of that.

it would be nice to see people putting their money where their mouth is though

Could we not give the visitors a little more credit for intelligence, after all it is fairly obvious when some people are talking sense, as it usually backed up with a coherent arguement.  Conversely it is not exactly difficult to spot the chaff!!

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

The whole idea of a forum is to debate a subject.  if someone puts a question out there, they are expecting a discussion to aid their decision.  If they are foolish enough to listen to the first answer then that's their problem!

People don't necessarily need to be a highly qualified boat builder or designer to have an opinion on performance of a certain boat, block or type of rope.  Its all experience and feedback.  Anyway, if you are wrong there will be plenty of people on here that will argue the case the other way.

People shouldn't take the information on here as gospel.  When you post a question just read the whole thread and make up your own mind.

or better still read the whole forum, go with the flow and get a Cherub.

what do you give more value to, an opinion or a qualified opinion?

it was only a whimsical thought.
