Getting a degree is not like school you can go at any time I had nearly a five year gap, during which time I was mostly sailing (sadly not quite at Olimpic level) between school and uni and I don't think that it did me too much harm. Not sure that I added much to the topic but the idea that uni is just for 18 year old dose kind of get on my nerves. |

I'd go to Uni if someone was paying me to sail.
Just think, the longer you can keep getting money from them, the better! For you anyway ![]() I didn't bother with Uni, but to be honest, I dont think I will. Not even if I was payed to go. I'm doing a decent full time job, and am getting a head start over all those who are wasting time / money going to Uni. Edited by Villan |

Likewise, uni isn't that important... experiance is far more so, especially in industry

"experiance is far more important" Well yes, but these days in a lot of lines of work you are unlikely to get that first job in order to gain the experience without a degree. Thirty years ago 10% of people went to uni and the vast majority of jobs were available to people without degrees. The situation today is rather different given that around 50% of people are entering the job market with degrees.

That can be said for people with degrees i have friends which left uni 5 years ago, and struggled to get decent jobs, a degree isnt what it used to be. Remeber you can get degrees in some sh*te subjects now! I started work after doing my a-levels, i could of got in to uni but decided i would only go for the wrong reasons (booze and women) While some of my mates where spending 3-4 years at uni studying, i got a job got paid etc. worked myself to where i am now. The funny thing is some of my ffriends that went to unis and got PROPER degrees are still earning LOADS less then i am!

there should be more selection of places that big events come to, on the moray firth theres no where to race and even if there was no 1 would notics |

I'm guessing you wouldn't have been going to Uni to study English! Your right in some respects, Uni was always supposed to be the pinacle of academic achievement and around 15% of people attended. There's very little point in 50% of people having degrees if the only 15-20% of jobs are 'graduate jobs'. However since everybody seems to be getting a degree if you choose not to get one I think you need to be able to offer something else to a potential employee. ps. Don't get me started on the lack of science and engineering graduates. |

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

Lack of graduates? Then why is it so hard for science graduates to get a decently paid (or any job?) even when they have a phd? I think most science graduates are awaiting the day this shortfall kicks in and they are in demand and get paid properly! |
