water does not hydrate you as quickly as a decent energy drink. Otherwise why would all top athletes use them! I know that Skandia Team GBR do testing for Science in Sport (SIS) to try out new drinks and energy bars. There GO electrolyte hydrates you alot faster than water and keeps you hydrated for longer. It hardly has any suger compared to most drinks per 80g serving for 1 litre of water it has 76g of carbs and on 13g is sugar.
there are alot of crap drinks out there but if you mix a standard isotonic such as powerade with water (50/50) then the sugar level is harved and it will go into you bloodstream quicker.

I've seen it recommended several times (mostly in cycling mags, I guess) that all you need in the drinks dept. is 25% fruit juice and 75% water. The fruit juice helps the body absorb the water.
It's also a great drink served warm when you get man-flu. Add paracetamol and you've got 'natural' Lemsip!

The amount of sugars in the isotonic drinks is huge and if you're working along the principles of needing sugar for sport you might as well just drink a can of coke out there. I always feel I perform a lot better by eating food like a cereal bar or fig rolls and drinking water than by drinking isotonic drinks. |
Wasn't suggesting that you should only use energy drinks as a source of fuel but a combination of some drink and and slower realeasing energy sources, like you suggest, to meet your longer term energy requirements.
Anyway, I'm not drinking the stuff hours in advance, but when I need it, so quick energy is needed. I find if I drink water, it just goes straight to my bladder!

Man-flu is a serious ailment. Lemsip will not touch it although a hot-toddy (best make it a double) will relieve the symptoms. The only known remedy is to take Monday or Friday off work. Possibly both.

Hi , thank you for all your replies, they are really helpfull. I will answer a few questions to clear up some quieries:
- I am female
- I sail all kinds of laser.
- I am 5 ft
- By performance sailing I mean top level competitions.
- I am a veggie and not even my sailing will make me change that.
- I don't drink those crappy sports drink because of all the colorings and aditives.
- I sail 3 times a week. I leave lessons for three afternoons to go and sail.
So if i eat carbs, protein shakes and lots of water I should be well on my way to building up muscle?

Well in a girl way yeah but you'll never have uber defined
schwarznegger muscles because girls just don't have the ability to pack
on that amount of muscle. And if you were going for that look you
would want to cut carbs out of your diet after about 3pm because in the
evening we tend to relax a bit and then that un-used, un-digested
carbohydrate will turn to fat overnight. Do you already use
protein shakes? I wouldn't really advise it, especially not in
sailing. Lots of water is very important. You should be
aiming for about 15 glasses of water a day and lots of exercise and
lots of fruit and veg because these help you to develop a more
efficient metabolism.

I'd like to add my thoughts, as I have sailed since I was a teenager myself, have always loved fresh, good quality food, have enjoyed vegetarian cooking, but not gone vegetarian; and now have two teenage children who sail like mad. It's my job to leave enough food lying around to make sure they don't go hungry!
Given your height, weight and age, you are almost certainly still growing. You are leading an active lifestyle compared to many teenagers and you will use up calories quickly. You don't say whether you eat diary products and whether you eat fish. It's great if you are eating milk and cheese and eggs as this makes it so much easier to get proteins (and other things) when you need them.
Good luck, eat well and eat lots of different types of good food!

Tessa's right. Dairy products are a great source of natural protein and also helps to shift fat through your body more quickly. Try to drink skimmed milk a bit as well as water.

At my age I just try to eat enough to stay alive, and I am losing the battle! Any diet suggestions that will make me feel 46 years younger like Heltz and keep me sailing for another 20 years?

Beer...well, you'll think you are 46 years younger for a few hours, but will feel 20 years older the next morning!
