Rick

You're right, just picked up on the twin trapeze option and suggested on ebased on that.    29er is a good idea, have only sailed one a couple of times and really liked them.

I personally would think it will go twin trap, after all they are trying to make sailing more exciting to watch and more spectator friendly, and surely the more athletic girlies on trapeze wires the better!

Seriously though from a perception point of view going twin trap has a number of advantages.  The boats will tend to be faster than single wire boats, there will be more crashes, it's easier to get on board footage featuring two heads in frame, it will put the womens classes on equal terms with the mens (ie a twin wire skiff), mark roundings will tend to be more exciting to watch (helm staying out on wire etc) plus if the conditions are variable there will be more obvious differentiators with what is happening ("The Brits went left up the beat and are twin wiring into the top mark where the US on the right are only single wiring, in the meantime the Swiss have elected to single wire and soak downwind where the French are twinning and sending it).

If I recall rightly you don't see women's cycles with a dropped crossbar any more, the kit is just a smaller version of the mens!

You are probably correct but today how many all female crews are sailing twin trap boats?

Should the Olympics not reflect the sport rather that the reverse?

Umm, they have the Yngling, Star(ok popular with rich americans) and Skud!!!
And others that I don't think people would sail if they weren't olympic.

Off topic comment:- Why do they have to seperate the sexes anyway? What's wrong with having what happens in the real world - mixed crews?!!!

I believe that there are countries where "mixed doubles" sailing is somewhat frowned upon. But if that can be overcome I think a mixed doubles class would be good.

That may be true but another wrong selection would not fix the existing ones ...

Fair point Rick but if it reflects the sport in general then we should be having the RS200 as a mixed class and stuff like Fireballs back in the selection.

In fairness I know of very few women who sail Europes or Radials, and I've never even seen a Star or a Yngling.  Probably the reason that there are not that many women skiff teams is that if we are talking about women who would presumably be young and physically fit enough to represent their country at the Olympics, up until very recently there has not been a suitable twin wire boat for them to sail across the wind range with their projected weight.  Either a Cherub or Spice would be about right however these have not really been viable options in the past.  And I think that there are a few all girl RS800 teams, we certainly have one at our club.

Let's face it, if the Olympics accuratly reflects the sport in general for the avergae sailor, we can also forget the 49er and Tornado too, as these are out of the skill or pocket range of the average sailor.  And as for windsurfing, forget racing and just award the medals for tricks or top speed as as far as I am aware that is what the vast majority of board sailors do these days!  Chuck out the velodrome and either do road racing or mountain biking as that is what your average club cyclist will be doing too.

The Olympics has always been a showcase for men and women at the very top of their game so I see no reason whatsoever that a twin wire skiff should not be the way forward for the girls.

Didn't the Bethwaites make a womans / youth rig available for the 49er a couple of years ago? Makes sense, shared events around the world. 140 kgs is about 22 stone in English... is that not going to be too heavy for a 29er derivative?
