I did it, it took me 4hrs and 43 min, thats slower than Gordon Ramsey but faster than Steve Redgrave. It was a great atmosphere and I have raised around £1800 so far. Thanks for your help Isabelle.

I am still alive but very sore and I won't even talk about the damage done to my nipples as I forgot the vaseline. I  will certainly have alot more sympathy for my wife when breastfeeding begins.

All the best

Gareth

Well done Gareth.  Its about 26 miles than I would want to run on a sunday morning!

Not trying to detract from your immense achievement at all here but one of my housemates friends managed the marathon in 3 and a half hours.... this may not sound too impressive at first, but he was wearing a full rhino suit!!

Clap Clap Clap Clap Gareth you're a star! Clap Clap Clap Clap

I can hardly run for the bus, let alone 26 miles!

and for a worthy cause Thumbs Up

But now, please tell me, what's with the nipples thing? Bad chafing ? Rash vest too tight ? Strange running tradition to welcome newbies, usually not broadcasted on TV before the watershed? I want to knooooooooooooooooooooow!

Thank you Wink

With long distance kayaking (and some cycling disaplines etc) you wear bags on your back with a tube to keep hydrated on the move.
The rashes the straps give you on a long race (affectionately termed platty rash) if you dont pad up properly (vasseline doesnt help much, electrical tape was better) are out of this world and probibly pretty similar to runners nipple... theres not much worse than the fealing of it getting raw and knowing you still have 15 miles left...

Oh happy days...

Too right! For my long-distance cycling i put a load of electrical tape across my chest to stop the chafing!!!
Otherwise.....
The pain is something else!

The pain of pulling the tape off your chest would be bad enough! "Do it Yourself" waxing. Ouch!!!

Also not to detract from my acheivment Michael Miller from my sailing club (Brighton) did it in 3:09 he is in the top 5% of his class (over 40), but even more astounding was Emma Garwood who ran it in 4hrs 50, just 7 min slower than me, and she is 88 years old.

The nipple thing was chaffing, I understand plasters/tape are better but I only have four hairs on my chest and I'm not willing to lose them.

My best man ran the london marathon in the morning and then did the best man's speech in the afternoon followed by a barn dance in the evening...

(He is still alive but has only just forgiven me!)

One step forwards, 2 steps back...
