I think this depends where you sail.   On open sea or large lakes I think the laser yardstick is still tough to sail to against higher performance boats.   On more restricted waters or against slower boats I can understand why it might appear generous.   Clubs can adjust figures if they think the national numbers are wrong for their water.

They can, but the can of worms that gets opened means it rarely happens.

I would qualify that, on open flat estuary or big lake style water it could be true, but on the sea with waves and surfing conditions the laser can more than hold it's own, our series was won by a Laser on 1078, at 1099 it's a complete weapon, seeing that carbon rig, I'm almost tempted to Bandit one for a season if it wasn't for the fact I've got something so much nicer to sail even though I'm going to get slaughtered by Lasers in 80% of conditions.

Yeah that new Laser rig is a new class mate, anyone who tries to pass the 'new' (and as yet unofficial) Laser rigs from either LP or PSA is definitely pot hunting.

I'd do a great lakes on them and give them a ridiculous PY until there was some kind of data.

Bloody new classes, eh? Too many already, newfangled materials, shouldn't be allowed. International 12 was good enough for my great grandfather...

Why not just give them a fair PY?

No room for PYAG smoke filled room conspiracy theories, then.

How would you do that though? The 8 is likely to be faster than the Rooster 8.1.

Someone rocks up with one, you estimate their PY, they win everything and that then upsets the rest of the club. Better to give a punitive PY until you have some data in the system and then review it after a month of 2 (as long as there have been a few races and you can compare to the persons previous results).

Just don't give a PY at all for a few races. Then compare timings and positions in reverse. If you have good standard Laser results for the person sailing, set the new yardstick to reflect those results. No need to be easy or punitive, just methodical.

So in effect a notional PY of 1000 (unless you take their finishing place out completely).
