Last team racing I did was in Bosuns for this reason!
It used to be possible to charter a fleet from the Navy?

Many years ago,and possibly what sawman is referring to, there was a number of "own boat" team racing events. Up north there was the Ullswater Twighlight Transom [in November!!], Ripon's Tilcon trophy and one at Derwent Reservoir that I cant remember the name of. I know the 12;s and 14's had similar events.
Being in your own boat and not just University teams, it was a lot less bumper cars but still pretty competitive.
Also in those days the RYA team racing championship had a widespread entry of club teams and not just the few hyper-expert teams that contest events nowadays

Does any creative ideas on how to get around this 'chicken and egg' situation of boats and any other comments on getting team racing started?

One idea for boats would be to use Lasers to get started; although not a traditional team racing boat, there are lots them around, they are the same and in general people know how to sail them.

Really whatever club boat you have is fine: Ents, Wafs, 2Ks, Bosuns, Fevas...
Lasers work but they tend to damage quite easily with those stupid thin gunwales.

If you and your club were set on "Team racing boats" it's possible to build up a flight of Laser 2's, old Larks or 420s quickly and cheaply from universities and club sin-bins. If you really wanted Fireflies, 6 glass ones start at around £900-1000 per boat or you could pick up 6 wooden ones for a couple of grand all in (There are loads at the £200-£400 mark around in gardens and garages that wouldn't take a massive amount of work to get on the water).

you are right oldbloke. the first sailing trophy I ever won was as part of the Pilks SC winning Rudyard Cannon team. Dont know if that still runs - sailed in Ents.
At pilks we used to team race against WLYC, southport, west Kirby, usually the host club would provide the boats. I suppose that these days with many more classes of boat being sailed within clubs, getting enough reasonable boats in any class would be problematic - my club could probably manage toppers....
