I14 Rig and a trapeze on a laser hull. Might need racks or wings though.

I am reflecting on making a boat for the common working man, I may call it the "Sun". What do you think?

Boat design is not an easy subject and nor is it cheap. Its refreshing to see the eagerness to design and build a boat but it really does need a huge investment in time and money, just ask Dan Holman. Its also wise to have a vision and a rationale behind what you are doing.

Good luck

Suggest you start reading here...

Oh, and Mike Cooke is right: if foils are in your shopping list just got for a Moth: there's no evidence at the moment that trapezes/kites will actually make for a faster boat than the standard Moth platform.

Personally I advise that your first boat is built to an existing class. I guess the International Canoe, National 12 and most of all the Cherub are the obvious choices. You'll get support from other people, you have an existing platform to base ideas on and so on, there are a dozen things that make it not only easier but also more fun to be within a class.

Of course its quite possible to build your own one-off, I've done it myself, but its a much lonelier and more troublesome path. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't been within one of the development classes for a while to gain all the knowledge and experience you can from that...

Why not- it's your 10 to 15 grand to get it on the water....

Why not just sail your 29er singlehanded for a while, then maybe try either a Moth or MPS.

I have to say, if you're really keen to foil then get on with it while you're young enough, fit enough and light enough to learn without having to factor in salad and sit-ups.
