Good evening Tick. Sorry I was not suggesting that the class pay for the training, I was suggesting that they organize it (like I do for the Laser class) For example I am coaching this weekend at Stokes Bay for the UKLA. Far from costing the class, they will make a small amount of money off the weekend. The regional training works very much like a squad system. Thank you for the congratulations but I have to say that Lily was an incredibly hard working and talented young lady. The last time I weighed myself I was 66 Kgs (first thing in the morning after visiting the bathroom) but I guess that I am a bit lighter than that now as I am having Cortisone injections for a shoulder injury and therefore not training at the moment... < id="_npwlo" ="applicationpwlo" height="0"> Edited by Jon Emmett - 22 Nov 12 at 7:41pm |

It occurs to me that this conversation has been going on for a while now on what I consider to be the principle organ of British dinghy sailing. Obviously the RYA never read it. They could at least tell us why they do not wish to support the YOG.

Jon, with respect, the class can provide training in an amateur way but cannot afford to provide the kind of coaching in which you specialize. What would be needed is something akin to the squad system. By the way, congratulations on your Radial win. This is a personal question but how heavy are you?

In terms of a small CAs budget it is a hell of a lot, and, at least when I was involved, if you had commercial involvement in your stand the price went up too. I have always understood the temptation not to go, but it definitely makes the class look as if its in big trouble. |

I think you have to gauge awareness as well as participation. The 80,000 crowd in the athletics stadium probably didn't see it as a minority event!

The grown up Olympics is a minority event, too, really - just one person per class from each country, and not even many countries represented. |

It's not that I don't think the c2 is a good boat - we have one after all, and I have its big brother - but I don't see why there should be any obligation on the RYA to fund training for a minority event.

the RYA choose to put theri money into classes where there is strength in numbers, which pretty much ensure talent and determination will rise to the top. As Jon said, there is nothing to stop individuals or the class getting a programme together to send kids to the YOG. Why should the RYA do it? They already fund a pretty successful system, why should they diversify into an event that is not yet widely attended? There were just 29 sailors in the boys race in Singapore. The RYA's money is better spent preparing sailors for the ISAF and individual CA events.

to put this in context, my experiences were with the older rig on the sea; maybe the newer one makes the hull more easily driven through chop, plane earlier downwind and offer more stability on gybing, but eaither way, the platform's not been altered and frankly I didn't think much of it, nor did many others I knew... hence the reason they bought radials instead.
