I fear when I read a post like that you don't understand why in your diagram 3 the additional of the current over diagram 2 has allowed you to sail closer to the true wind ... I suspect you think some additional flow over the foils (i.e. the perception of being referenced to the land) is what is making that happen rather than understanding that the sailing wind is backed from the true wind as a result of the current induced wind. It must be hard to get your head around this having been confused for so long but think about it ... |

Which is exactly why half the fleet will still tack onto the down tide side then wonder wtf happened upon tacking over to see the rest of the fleet are already around the mark and gone..
Or they'll wait to be late out of a gate start and wonder why they sailed straight into a world of dirty wind pain.
You can't help some folk, they never can get their head round it. The wind anchors the boat bozos.. Give it up now. You're beginning to look retarded.. Edited by G.R.F. - 20 Oct 11 at 3:40pm |

... along with Stan Honey, Lowell North, Peter Isler, Dave Perry, Walker & Rushall ... I'm cool hanging out with those retards. If only you could open your mind to some new learning to understand what you have experienced and let go of your incorrect assumptions you'd get it but as you are so pig headed you will stay where you are ... I think it's time to respect the saying ... never argue with a fool ... good luck on improving your 39th (4th last) in next years nationals ... |

I'm looking forward to my crewing invite at next year's Endeavour trophy representing the mighty V-Tv@t Class Association. ![]() edit- of course, we'll be showing 'y'all' about that lee bow effect... there's some interesting water up by the entrance of the Roach! Not good enough 7 minutes between posts, plenty of time for that rogue sea monkey to log out and then back in again as another muppet...
Right, so seriously this will go round and round, here's my last sketch on the subject.. ![]() Sketch A) determines a stock windward leeward course with the outer boundaries of the lay lines all things being equal. Steady Wind No tide. Sketch B) Along comes a tide from the Right which effectively we're all agreed moves the water playing field and goal posts to the left . Indicated in Red is an approximate course two boats would sail, one going downtide the other going uptide, OK it's extreme and exaggerated for illustration purposes, but it is what happens, I've seen it so often, lots and lots of times, by the time the boats (boards) who haven't clocked it have sailed left, by the time they come right they're having to bear away to get to the mark and the boats that went right, benefited by the tidal lee bow sail at best a short dogleg on their second tack by getting high enough to get the tide on their stern on the second tack.. now go tell that to your chums Perry et al. Have a word with one of your current Hero's Geoff Carveth, he's been about and taking a thrashing like a man when he once tried to step up to a mans version of competitive regatta sailing.. GRF, we got the point on going the right side with the tide on page one. Since then the rest of us have been talking about what dinghy sailors know as the lee bow effect, which has nothing to do with what you have drawn at all.

Curves? I think Newton would have something to say about curves.

You sail a curve, difficult to describe in a cheap drawing programme like that, but a time stop delay would make the point, you sail the course in sketch one, the tide moves the course sideways as you go progressively, so it's a curve described over the bottom, a straight line over the water maybe, the track is a curve, I'm wondering if I have some gps tracks somewhere that might even prove that, i shall have a look.
You may have got the point Rupert, but there are some ever so slightly retarded trolls here who don't or deliberately don't, whatever, it's all I'm going to be bothered with, I have more important things to do than to try and enlighten closed minds.. Nor after thirty five years and thousands of races in countless venues, am i going to be persuaded that I'm wrong, or my thinking on the matter is anything other than fact based.
