Rubbish. While I'm sure the will be big watersports clubs, we have loads of families joining who want a small, peaceful place to sail and socialise. That isn't going to simply go away.

And when the british economy collapses in a debt induced downward spiral travelling miles to a high overhead mega sailing centre will look like a very poor idea indeed...

In fact in recent years our small club seems to be growing. Maybe that's down to it costing too much to travel to this mega club tt is on about..... Anyway to quote a film "we're dooomed" |

Plenty of people in the UK seem to keep the sport of skiing going, even with very limited local opportunity to participate.... and it doesn't get its paralympians thrown out into the cold from lack of participation either. This 'mega club thing' - nice coinage Maxi - I am of course being deliberately hyperbolic to help stimulate discussion. The crux of it is, I don't think there's anything much wrong with the mix of boats or clubs we have on offer in the UK... nothing needs saving in such dramatic fashion, and worrying about whether 20s and 30s former sailors come back into the sport ain't that much of an issue either. Some will, some won't- SFW what the ratio is? My gut instinct would say that it also really won't matter whether they were squad junkies and club muppets like me either... the only issue of bloating the squads is that it obviously reduces footfall at local clubs in any given here and now. It keeps parents behind the binoculars rather than on the water for that given moment in their parenting lives. Frankly that's a waste of time for most of the kids, who really, really won't 'make it' in any Ainslie-esque sense of the word. The flip-side of this is that it at least keeps kids interested in sailing during influential years when there are frankly other potentially more attractive, fun things to be doing which wasn't just your childhood sport. So again, I'm not completely one-sided on opinions around providing a dedicated youth sailing infrastructure. If the kids really hated it, they wouldn't go would they? Once I retire and have an empty nest, I'm sure time down the club will be something to look forward to a couple of times a week. Start making the number of visits per annum nearer 100 than upper teens/early 20's, then yeah sure, 'small friendly clubs' might have more appeal. That's assuming that dichotomy actually exists anyway... I'd hardly call our nearest 'large' club unfriendly these days... quite the contrary, hence why I've just renewed after tipping a toe in over the winter. From what I hear it's the little ones with cliquey issues going on that frankly I can't be arsed with in any sport or social activity in my freetime. Edited by turnturtle - 05 Feb 15 at 3:18pm |

LoL, I'm not sure if that was aimed at me but shame on you Jim. You're assuming that anyone who argues against Thatcherism (I didn't, well not overtly anyway) has socialist views or approves of left wing policy. That shows very black and white thinking. |

That one is true.... large food producers and other global agri businesses are beginning to get rather sick of the UK food industry mentality- which is absolutely, 100%, down to the highly aggressive and unsustainable supplier relationships the main supermarkets adopt and the pricing policies they pass down. Horsemeat in UK burgers.... general response from inside the EU meat industry.... wtf did they expect?

Well Tesco are now about to be investigated about that jimbo. Like most things government related the will just tell them not to do it again and they'll carry on regardless.
May be though if the world suppliers pull out a bit it'll be a good thing. Food will become seasonal again and probably taste better and we will go back to creating veg plots in the three square centimetres of garden new houses come with. |

They're being investigated into the financial irregularity of payments and declarations, not the pricing policies. Tesco will claim it's 'healthy competition' with other supermarkets driving their cost base negotiation, actually they're running scared- share price is coming right down and they're going the same way as one of their major suppliers- Premier Foods. Macro trend shows society is dividing and the wealth gap growing. Tesco are falling down the gap- neither M&S/Waitrose nor Aldi/Lidl. Morrison and ASDA are really picking up major steam now competing with discounters- often with very good product at a slightly higher premium - they've got the mass market nailed. Both win nearly all the prized category awards in our industry.... And truth is, I've known companies who have been withdrawing from Tesco supply for several years now, including several meat processors down your way. Supplying Asda and Morrison, Waitrose and M&S are now the desirable customers in the UK food industry- not JS or Tesco.
