Velcro might be an interesting option for those who want to remove the thwart on occasions ... like me ! We will investigate.

Kicker and cunningham ... and sail a tad lower upwind of course with plate back a few degrees. Same as many/most boats really. Maybe ease the lowers a setting to allow the kicker to induce a bit more mast bent - other than that it is just practice really.
It was blowing last week at Datchet and the boat was easy enough and with more Icon-on-Icon practice now all will improve... In '03' we perhaps pinched a bit too much last week, going a bit lower definately looked faster. The VMG on open water and in breeze is improved by 'low n fast' .. but on more constrained water it may well pay to keep high. Best tuning tip of the lot has to be more practice ... Mike L. PS - We now have the Thwart option for anyone interested - It looks very good. I'll take some photos soon and post here soon ... |

It looks all wrong on that lovely fresh look, but I applaud you for giving a punter what he/she wants rather than being all anal about class rules and one design purity.

If they want it they can reasonably have it ... provided it does not make the boat faster. One of the interesting things is that a high proportion of early owners want to race with their partners or offspring. If a thwart entices the crew 'out' there a bit more easily then why not ?
The option NOT to have one is retained however. It is the same principle as allowing any sheeting system, the cost to switch is not that much and the CA regards these approved options as personal decisions. The one design principles are not softened in any area that has a real impact on speed. So all Icons have identical spars, foils, hull, sails etc. Mike L. PS - And yes AlexM ... it will be a great place to tidy up the lines etc ! |
