Tee hee! Oh no, you didn't actually believe the Laser hype about a 'Vortex' through the tunnel hull did you? I thought that was definately one for the 'punters' not anyone with any knowledge of fast boats. If you thought about that reasoning for a moment, the same would also apply to a Cat - as a similar 'vortex' would be set up by the tunnel between the two hulls and the trampoline - but of course it doesn't does it? In any case, any 'vortex' would dissapate as soon as one side of the tunnel left the water.i.e. the boat heels. To be fair, I suppose that theoretically there must be some lift. It might be an interesting experiment to see how fast you'd have to be going to get enough lift to flip a 75kg Vortex and a 75kg helm - I reckon about 100mph should do it! Any aeronautical engineers on here? Yes you're right - amongst several other boats I sail a Vortex - including on Saturday in gusts of up to 33kts |

I have heard first hand reports of a Vortex getting pitched over backwards in big waves and wind going up a beat. I guess unlike a cat there is plenty of area under the hull forward of the mast so its not quite impossible. Quite possibly you have to sail badly to persuade it to do that. After all Moths can capsize backwards like that tacking if you set your mind on it. I can't imagine it could be done without the big waves to get the big wind under the hull though.

im not an enginneers, but as a cat has a tramp surely there is less pressure as in the vortex no wind can escape through the tramp as there isnt one. I hope that makes sense. Well it sounded right in my head |

That tunnel system doesnt work - When I used to race A Class's the vortex was just introduced. Still remember one windy reach - I was worried about the lee bow, and then I notice a vortex pitchpole BEFORE me!! HAHA - also they have that stupid hole in the back - so the air can still escape upwards! But where can I get those little cameras - tube like, which just have the SD card in, and work via remote control? me wants! |

Moths falling over backwards is just due to buoyancy, my 14 falls over
backwards if you cock a tack up n get stuck head to wind.. boat
reverses, tail sinks and bang ur in!

Here is my 59er this afternoon in reasonable wind on a small lake. (Note to others who have followed my 59er thoughts on this forum, this is not my daughter crewing, she is on the camera, I can only apologise....) |

True but it keeps your boat handling sharp. Also you get to play knock the hat off the topper sailor with your bowsprit.
