People used to put substantial boats on the roof, because the speed limit was 40 for towing at one time.

No way is any train operator going to allow that. Bicycles are bad enough. Imagine emergency evacuation with a fleet of Solos aboard!

My impression is that dinghy sailing in the form
We know it evolved with private car use explosion Of the 60s and 70s. If the type and capabilities of cars change, the Sport will adapt. The Americans have big college racing circuit with CL420s which stay put. It would be straightforward to organise similar here, Separate from the University team racing scene. It would change the style of sailing and reduce the interest in more exotic craft. |

Exactly so Riv, life evolves as circumstances change.
In any case, in real life how many dinghies as a percentage of the total sailed at clubs (which itself is a small percentage of those sitting at clubs) get towed around to travellers. In some ways apart from a minority of sailors we could be searching for a problem looking for a solution. |

Having a quick glance through the most popular classes in the UK, adding up the traveller boats to opens and the handicap opens, Great Lakes etc, you are talking about a couple of thousand journeys.

Wasn't ot Ferrari who brought out a car for track days which they then kept, and would bring to each meet? Maybe a model for Merlin sailors?

Yes, it is, and not just one model either now. Some Other super car manufacturers have done the same. Do we have equivalent Super-dinghy manufacturers? ![]() |
