Tell you what......I got lots of sweeties and enjoyed them! A girl on a well known fittings stand offered us beer (my charm and the two good looking young stooges i was with did the trick) but we had no bottle opener. It would have been very bad form to stuff unopened bottles in our pockets so we were forced to decline. In future I will carry a bottle opener in my man bag because two pints of insipid Carlsberg cost £9.50!

... and if the well known fittings manufacturer had been staffed by a man he would have lent you a shackle key and set about the three of you with a challenge. Naturally, experience and a parsimonous attitude towards 'free beer' so prevelant in students and retired folks, would mean you could have smoked those clumsy fingers oiks you were with and have asked for a second....

Always, always, carry a bottle opener. I have one of those little flat plate multi tools in my wallet. Only useful for prying tiller extension clippy things off, undoing shackles and opening bottles, really, though I have opened cans of beans with it in an emergency. Amazingly, I've had it over 30 years. Lost it several times, but somehow it always gets found again.

As for the Dinghy show...I know the D-Zero stand was very busy and, looking back, we could have organised ourselves a little better. This was the first show for the CA though so we live and learn.
Class t-shirts or Polos are definitely the way forward along with a name badge identifying who you are (just makes you look a little more official). Aside from that was was a huge amount of interest. We even had some RS people nosing around.....

My belt has a bottle opener, along with binding tool and phillips and flat bade screw driver heads on the buckle, doesn't everybody's ?
I recognise not everyone wants the hard sell, but they don't mind a bit of fun and razzmatazz which is what a class stand should be about. The Pro stands must know all the other stuff or they wouldn't still be around, having said that I've been on the Hartleys stand everywhere I've seen them, the LBS, SBS, DS every year since and not once have I been approached and so it is I guess, their technique has to be least cost routing to market and wait for your approach, not always a good decision in my view. You can't listen to all that 'don't bother me I don't want you to sell me anything from all those tyre kickers ' the stock answer to them is what the f**k are you doing on my stand wasting my time then if you're not going to buy anything. (Delivered with a cheeky grin and obviously outrageous over the top manner) In fact why have you even come to this show taking up space?Edited by Woodbotherer - 13 Mar 15 at 11:56am |

Oh come on chaps.....I do have an image to support! I could hardly be seen rolling round the stand searching for ways of prising off bottle tops whilst dribbling in anticipation. I was trying to look like a respectable father figure in front of a particularly attractive young lady (can I say that Nessa?) not a desperate drunk.
