Agreed. I know the area a bit and I would have put the first half at around 10 knot breeze and the second at maybe 20 tops, which is windy enough in all conscience. The sea and spray just aren't being kicked up enough for serious breeze. Edited by JimC |

bearing in mind i have seen (and im not lying) a 1000+ knot gust reading on bramblemet i would suggest there was probably a problem with bramblemet.
You do not sail in 50 knots! watch on 4od that thing about that brain dead child who sailed round the world in that noah-built ark and see what it looks like when he is sat in a 5o knot storm. granted its in the S.Ocean but u wouldnt sail in it. I think even leg-ends would be blown away in that wind. |

That's Chris 'Bronze Medal at Athens' Draper and Peter 'Give it some salad in the Higher and Faster DVD' Greenhalgh. I chatted to Chris in the pub after Sailing for Gold. What a great sport sailing is! Edited by ellistine |

Skiffman's description of surviving it (what 50knots is really like) doesn't tally with the video of the kite being popped, does it? I think Captain Jack might be right about lunch...

Just to say that we were out on Tuesday when it got a little bit windy. We
basically ended up between calshot and leap not being able to bear away. Then we decided to take the main down so that we could get in, but by the time we got the main down we could not keep the boat upright with just the jib up! Even with both of us hanging off the trapeze rings and the board half up... So then we dropped the jib and by this time we had been drifting upwind (wind against tide). Then we got all the way down to Calshot surfing the waves with just the mast in the sky. It was a pretty epic 49er session in the solent! We were a little bit cautious on wednesday and yesterday and did not sail upwind of calshot. also I am pretty sure it was that windy, all we could see was white looking downwind and there was spray off the waves being blown across the water and we could not keep the boat upright with 150kg hanging off the loops with a jib up! Thats as maybe, i see Ice hockey as a sport for thick Americans and Canadians! Doesn't mean my Opinion is right! There is no doubt its a good video, i am just questioning the Forum wind gauge! at 50knots the sea would be in a foaming state and trees start getting uprooted! Now if a fecking tree gets uprooted then an over canvassed 90's skiff is probably going to go with it! Olympians in tow! |

I'm going for 15-20knots max in the 49er video. 50knots couldn't have been recorded anywhere near them and actually be correct.

I think you are missing the point...a lot of people see sailing is blue blazers and gin and tonic...this makes it look more like ice hockey! |
