erm, because they're old feckers and they don't like change.... it took how long for those double poles to become mainstream on some classes, even now I don't think they're allowed on some popular classes like fireballs? You couldn't make a scratch crew from a couple of bored, knee wrecked laser sailors for a fireball and expect them to instinctively know what to do with the kite unless they'd used one before- that's where boats like the ASBO have such great potential, they're accessible, even for relative novices at the front end. NB: ... potential is not the same as a 'future'- there's still too many old feckers who don't like change and clubs that can't lay on a decent course using orange dumpies rather than static waypoints.... all of this while the RYA's pursuit of medals kills off the youth interest- sail racing really is quite f**ked. I think they are allowed on the Fireball Jimbo (more about fashion i guess, but my prediction is they will all be using them in the next 5 years), the reason they are only starting to become popular now (excluding the merlin) is it's not the concept but the exercusion. Using a twin spiro launcher is quicker then the old push out single launch pole, but the secret to the new breed of systems is the seperate guy and sheet systems, which remove the need for reaching hooks or twiners. you can pre set the guy length so all you then have to worry about is getting the pole launched (by pulling a string) and grabbing the new sheet. its wonderfully simple. The older systems still used twinners or hooks which complicated/sloed the system.

Agree Oldarn,
I reckon most 505ers would prefer windward/leeward too given the choice.
In my experince, many PRO's seem quite happy to listen if we ask nicely for our preferences.
Of course there is politics if a 505 wins the asymetric fleet.
Also sailing in the middle handicap, it is always a good scrap to see if you can beat the f/ballers.

If you were to make one side of the kite 20mm or so shorter than the other then why the politics! |

Andrew Wilde who was the first phantom is the inland national champ. He is relatively lightweight and won the champs in light conditions. He's pretty quick in moderate stuff too.
