The replicas must be being made in reasonably large batches for that to be a decent margin, but at 1/3 the price of a real one, there will be plenty of takers.

Not true, the last replica I purchased was made to order in the UK and was very reasonably priced. Not as low as £135 but not far off.

Isn't this thread supposed to be about the new Laser sail ?

No doubt some folk can harp on and on about how expensive proper Laser sails are until next Christmas but hasn't it been covered and discussed time and time again ?

Whether you chose a proper Laser sail or a cheaper copy its still one of the cheapest boats to race - no more need be said ?

Which is why the subject digressed.

I am thinking of buying a new laser sail. Has any one tested the Mark 2 and is it any good?

£395 for a radial Laser sail doesn't look too extortionate even if it looks as out of date as bell bottom jeans. Kneewrecker touched upon Solo sails and a North 3DL moulded sail will set you back an eye watering £1,200+. To be fair, it is a thing of rare beauty. Jeremy Corbyn might not approve but many a middle aged empty nester including me finds it hard to resist. At least there are numerous other sailmakers offering similarly competitive sails for much lower prices.

That is the crux of the argument and problem many people have with Laser.

Other lofts can make the same product from the same cloth for a fraction of the price and make it profitable.

Even allowing the fact that a royalty has to be paid that does not make up for a £150-£200 margin.

That and if you contact Laser and do a bulk order for around 4-5 or more sails they say they will match an replica price currently on the market.

But we have been over this before. £395 for a sail on the face of it looks good value until you ascertain that LP can still make a profit when offering a significant discount on a relatively low volume.

As a word of caution, back in the day, we marketed the North 3dl sail for windsurfing it was £1200 back then and came I believe in a 6.5 or 6.8 anyway that's not the relevant point, the point was it turned out slower than the exact same design in conventional build and it puzzled me greatly at the time.

After much mind wrestling and offering them up together they were identical in every way, but...

The RDL did not imv 'like' being altered from it's pre ordained and moulded shape, whereas the conventional stitched sail didn't mind being adjusted. Which for top end use meant loads of downhaul and better twist with better exhaust and thus higher top speed.

So moral of the tale, don't waste your cash.
