Thanks Nick that does not sound too bad. I had read a report from someone doing it themselves and cutting and grinding was involved.

Great boat by the way and I am having lots of fun.

I think we are just about to get our 3rd boat at Lancing. I was offering test sails last week and each person that tried it loved it.

I've just got meself a scond hand boat and Couldn't agree more, great boat great fun, however I'm finding it very difficult to handle in a blow!!not so much on a reach but uphill,I sail on a lake, reasonable size, surrounded by trees when it blows it can gust from near nothing to 25 knots and some,I struggle to depower quick enough even when I see the gust comming she either ends up going over or head to wind, and then I find it hard to bear away to get going again,I would say I'm an average ability sailor,14.5 stone and 8.4sqm sail,do I just need time on the water or is there a knack? I'm trying to locate some training but not having much luck.I've had enough practice at the capsize drill I need to learn how to sail her now!!HELP!!

Hi, For me uphill is all about what you put into it in terms of effort. Making sure you are hiking as the gusts hit is absolutely essential.

At 14,5 stone you have plenty righting moment Wink

Just hike like mad as the gusts hit you instead of worrying about quickly altering the sail controls - it will be too late by the time you pull strings.

Good luck....

We now have 4 RS 100's in Minorca, available with 7.4, 8.4 & 10.2sqm sails. You can sail the 100 in any of our Asymmetric tuition groups, on a 1 to 1 basis with an instructor during our personnel tuition sessions, or just on your own!

Thanks,my righting moment is 14.5 stone of pure muscle ,Seriously though I do try to hike as much and as hard as I can,but still up she goes, should I sheet out and bear off lots and correct afterwards, which is hard when your trying to make the mark.

if it's gusty the downhaul's on tight anyway and the kicker should be pretty well cranked.

So ease the sheet, bear off slightly just before the gust; use the gust to jump up a gear in boat speed 5.5 ave to 7-8 knots possible. Luff in the lulls and make ground back to windward. You realise this boat's been maximised for open water right?

Hike harder, loosen the toestraps and hike harder. When offwind, hike even harder to get through the bearaway. Once the kite's up, head up, sheet in to stop the main blanketing the kite and you guessed it... now it's time to really start hiking.

Minorca Sailing,Thanks for the link,I was thinking of something a bit closer to home, and slightly less expensive, although it does sound very appealing falling off in warm water!

Jimbo,I've seen that DVD although very informative,it appears mostly for as you say "open water",I think I need to get out on the water and practice my technique. Thanks for the info.

As others have said before be prepared to constantly play the main aswell. As Rogue said ease quickly in gust and be prepared to sheet in quickly afterwards.

I've been sailing mine on Frensham for a year now and we get those nothing-to-armegeddon days too. If the breeze is really that horrible, step one is set the rig up for the top end as being blown over is slower than a stalled leach in the flat spots! Step 2 is heel to windward in anticipation of the gust then play the mainsheet for all you are worth and step 3 is be really aggressive with a bounce on the wing if it heels as well.

Forgive me if you know this: At our place, life is made harder by the trees causing downdrafts, where the wind fans out as it hits the water. Upwind, these cells first head you then lift lift lift. If you head up on the lift phase, its likely the next cell will bring such a header that you will blow in to windward as the sails fill on the wrong side. Nasty and wet. The 100 does not really like stuff-n-flap anyway, so I sail free in the lifts and take the speed rather than height.
I am 12.5st and virtually always use the 10.2 for club racing, so hang in there - its worth it
