The RS200 website quotes a separate handicap for sailing without the kite. That would be attractive to me as I never seem to get to practice with a crew in the Spice so our kite handling is pretty rubbish  Embarrassed

Given that I fitted an old rules Merlin kite to my 1960 built Ent (for cruising/playing) I think it's probably a sensible compromise bothe for the Ent and the 3.7.

that was always an oddity to me. The Ent was always 'drawn' with a kite and the design had always allowed for a kite but it was never used (according to a good friend of mine who was involved in the UK CA).

Apparently the kite kit can fitted and included in the min hull weight so there is no weight penalty if you have it on the boat while racing. I assume you would remove the sail and string for class racing. The Enterprise allows a spinnaker now but only at the discretion of the National CA and not at International events. Wiki tells us it is allowed by the US and the UK and Canada have a separate handicap for spinnaker equipped Ents but don't allow it in fleet racing. Given that I fitted an old rules Merlin kite to my 1960 built Ent (for cruising/playing) I think it's probably a sensible compromise both for the Ent and the 3.7.

it probably means, in layman terms, all the garb can remain fitted as long as the chute is empty.

Personally I think a kite ruins its look and charm.... but each to their own.

How come a spinnaker is 'allowed' .. but 'not when class racing'.  Allowed in what sense by the class then  ?

I was disappointed to see that the 3.7 was omitted from the dinghy classes guide in the latest Y&Y magazine. Especially since, in terms of boats, the class has grown substantially since last year.

The NZ Class is very helpful. I bought my boat 'sight unseen' (apart from pics) from NZ and there were no issues at all. I am pretty sure that if there were any second hand boats available* in NZ (the class has become rather popular recently!) And someone wanted to bring one over to the UK. That one of the class officers would have a look at it, or would know the boat, and so could give sound advice on your purchase.

*(There is a pro built hull for sale in NZ, but there is no gain in bringing it over as Butler Boats will make you one for less.)
