Depends on conditions. In waves upwind power and leverage will beat wetted surface area and lightness. Unless it's foiling of course.

What percentage of UK dinghy sailors sail in real waves?  Not on ponds and reservoirs, and even on our river we really only get a chop (which the Blaze does not really seem to like with its low bow freeboard).

A few of you lot seem obsessed with the Blaze !!   .... Keep up the good work guys it cannot do the class much harm at all  Wink

But seriously you would be better making comparisons with something a bit more similar ....Europe, Finn, OK anyone ?

Mike L

PS -  Do you have many Blazes on the Medway ?

I was only referring to the Blaze, Mike, in response to Simon's comment:

But yes, the WSC is a bit of a Blaze hot spot at present.  We have six who are pretty regular, about to be joined by another, plus three occasionals.  We'd like to see them become a fleet and get their own start, but for the moment they prefer to stay in the Medium Fleet which they dominate if neither of our hot Mk4 Wayfarers is out (in which case they rend their garments in frustration over the Wayfarer PY!)

Hi Medway

OK - understand now .... and also pleasently surprised if those Blaze numbers are for real.  We still find it mildly amusing that the Blaze seems to have become some sort of benchmark on a few threads at the moment .... not that anybody minds really this end.  But what about that additional but perhaps more relevant (ie unstayed) boat the RS 300 ?

BTW we had heard that Ian Foxwell is/was also in the market for a decent Blaze currently in your neck of the woods so the CA maybe should think about another meeting next year ....

I understand that is a "was" so far as Ian is concerned, and he now once again has a nice newish Blaze - his third!

We'd be delighted to have you come to the Medway Regatta on 18 & 19th July 2015.  Six Blazes will mean class prizes within the Medium Handicap, 12 Blazes get their own start   Big smile

There, that's this thread well and truly hijacked.

Mike,
I'm not sure that's the case.  It was mentioned in another thread as the py was greater via the gl handicap system then both new boats.  You then got your arse out thinking I/others were suggesting you/we/whoever had some kind of hand in the py system.

You are right however not sure why the blaze is being compared more than any other class.  That said, people talked about the ok, finn and 300 earlier in these threads so it's probably just natural snow balling of threads.

Maybe some one should put trackers on these boats, sail them in a range of wind strengths and directions and plot some polars.  I would guess that the area encompassed by the polar would be representative of the performance accross the range.  It would be interesting to compare this data with the relative PY's.

It probably is fair to say that it is a real handicap to a start up class if the PY is too optimistic, I am pretty sure that it doomed the Tasar start up, because nobody could accept that a non-trap non-spi boat was ever going to sail as fast as a Fireball, even iif on occassion it could.

The Dzero at our sea based club is sailing off 1050 ( Dans recommended Number ) and seems about right.

We will be trying for 1040 for the 9 and 1065 for the 7. 1025 has been used on the RS website, but they believe thats too low for the sea. Gurnard are using 1035 at present and its not proving faster than that.

Hopefully we will get the numbers out so PY won't really bother us.
