It's great to hear that you got your hands on a Solution, especially a brand new one. Very jealous.
The top of the Solution centreboard has a friction strip- a bit like a piece of hose pipe, and there are a couple of screws which compress it making it wider. Try tightening these screws to stop the board coming up all the time. I put a shackle in the middle of the mast step bolt that the kicker attaches to and this stops it rubbing the mast step or the bolt and making nasty noises. The mast step bolt goes through the 2 holes in the shackle and the kicker attaches to the U bit. Like someone else I've tried both the flatter and fuller sails. They're a bit like marmite and people tend to have a definite preference. I'm guessing 75% of the fleet use the flatter sail, which is the one I prefer. I guess it's what you're used to, and there doesn't seem to be a clear cut winner in terms of speed. Perhaps you had the outhaul a little tight- you want the sail about 6 inches off the boom. As others have said, use mast rake and kicker like a Phantom, the difference being the lowers arn't adjustable on the water on the Solution, and the boom doesn't go as low. In fact I've not seen anyone adjust the lowers off the water either. |

I never used to bother with adjusting the lowers on my phantom reasoning at the point I needed to lose power and slacken the rig I was past caring what the lowers were doing.

I have a solution to the cb issue, a kitesurfing device that will enable it to be infinitely adjustable temporarily so won't ruin anything.
That's the problem it being brand new, I don't want to fix or fiddle with anything, it's still got to go back at some point.

But Graeme why adopt a kitesurfing device when the board has a perfectly good device on it for adjusting the tension? As others have said, just tighten the two screws to increase the grip of the board.

because its a dinghy and so therefore whatever is fitted is just wrong, rubbish and should never see the light of day. Nothing that a dinghy designer ever does is worthy of a positive review.... Chain plates?? Rubbish, obviously Raking rigs?? Not flexible enough Sails?? God what do they make them from, honestly, always been better on planks, etc, etc, etc. Advice to Graeme, don't worry about it, he knows best ![]() Actually it has been refreshing that despite all his deliberations and musings about dinghies and their failings, this is closest that our little buddy has come to admitting that some of the things we do in the dinghy world is actually ok. You've got to love him, always questioning, always challenging the norm, the kind of person that is needed in this world.....right up to the point when he won't let things go despite 99% of others telling him he's wrong

And how easy is it to adjust when you are trying to bear away in a fleet at the top mark and the wind is up? A well adjusted and packed centreboard will just work, you'll pull it up without having to think and of you go

Well like any other properly skilled helm wot has to prepare to embark on kite reaches and often has to get the pole pulled out , just releasing that little thing will be as easy as dumping the kicker, not that I'd want the plate to come all the way up so it will also serve to limit how far the plate is permitted to raise, it's just a thumb twist, you use it to control the range of depower on a kite, you know you now want one but can't bring yourself to ask.. Oh and chain plates? Really? You're going to defend the indefensible? They are total rubbish left over bits scrounged from some post war spitfire factory and pressed into service by messrs Dolt & co. Then replicated by Ron & Stan who being aussies drilled the holes the wrong size.. They should be banned, and anyone caught supplying them, horse whipped and as for those who would continue to advocate their further existence... a mental institution, it's the only way to be sure.

How are you supposed to attach the shrouds to the hull without chainplates? So manufacturer A drills holes of a different size to manufacturer B. So what. They come supplied with pins. Don't lose them.
