Scotsfinn / Peaky
I'm inclined to agree at one level .... but if that is what a proportion of customers want and it does not intrinsically make the boat faster then it is OK with us. We have been told on several occasions now that 'it is expected' by quite a few of the key decision makers ... er ... some of the crews out there that is. We have orders dependent on them becoming available as well. Quite a few crews are conservative with a small 'c' and really do want them as they have spent half a lifetime in company with them already and an Icon itself is already quite a shock to their systems in many ways. We allow any sheeting arrangement on Icon on the same basis - if it is about individual choice and does not make the boat faster then we should reasonably consider permitting it. In this instance we are permitting them and I'm getting behind it to make sure, for those that will benefit, that we do it properly.... and that they can as easily be removed as fitted in the first place. The weight increase can be very low in any event.... and if the crews comfort (and veto) is at stake we are not going to argue ! Mike L. |

Having done a lot of crewing in the past, sometimes you do need to sit in the middle, dead downwind, light wind etc. What do you do on an Icon.....kneel?

Trouble with thwarts is they're usually too far aft to use in racing, but if they weren't they'd be horribly in the way the rest of the time. As a result you can only use 'em between races.

Often it is useful to keep the helm and crew separate.........
I have removed the thwart on my lightning by the way.

You are absolutely right, moving around the icon is a breeze currently and the weight distribution is such that downwind in lighter airs you need to be forward with helm and crew opposite. Bench would be a pain.

I would have thought not having a kite made it a lot less important for the crew to sit in the middle of the boat, on a thwart?
The problem with the crew sitting to leeward is normally that they can't see the kite. Having dabbled in a few other boats, I'd say the thwart in the 400 is more trouble than it's worth, being able to get the helm's weight forwards easier would be better. Ergonomics is a much under-rated issue in dinghy design, it's one thing for olympic athletes and kids to leap around the boat, bit different when you're the wrong side of 50 with dodgy knees, hips, fitness...

Hi Mike,
Sure, offer it as an option if some want it but don't make it standard fit please. And don't allow travellers or hoops to be fitted to it either, just keep it as a bench. |

If it is curved, the crew will be forwards when sat on it down to leeward, will move aft slightly when the wind picks up and they slide up the seat - useful on a windy broad reach - but on the windward side it is far enough forwards that the helm can sit out behind it without being too far aft, and upwind when sat out, the crew can be up by the shroud, to keep the bow immersed, in front of the thwart. This is all assuming the cockpit is deep enough for it to be possible to sit on a thwart anyway and have somewhere for your legs to go.

If it could be fitted with a sort of kick pedal ejection device, to get the lazy b'stard to move, that would be helpful...

Now that gives me an idea: remotely operable toe strap adjustment so the forward hand can pull a string and get the transom ballast actually hanging over the side and contributing whether he likes it or not... Edited by JimC - 01 Oct 13 at 12:19pm |
