Tennis? can't a player challenge a dodgy line call. If upheld then either the point is reversed or they play a let.

Is there a prize Gordon?

You mean you weren't watching? LOL

It was quite impressive, a true screaming at the telly moment. In short she kicked the Chinese lassie in the face, which wins you a Taekwondo bout outright. And it was then spectacularly replayed, but the ref's had missed it (not sure how, think it's similar to boxing where a certain number of judges have to score it for it to 'count') and the bout was given to the Chinese girl. After much shuffling and footering around the result (in spite of much disquiet from the crowd) was overturned.

Quote from article;

"It was an unprecedented decision. The standard procedure is to say 'I'm sorry we are wrong but now can we get on'. But it had to be the correct decision and it's a credit to the organisers and the Chinese team who endorsed it," said Hall.

That must have been quite something for the Chinese to concede at their host event.
It appears that the decision was something of a precedent, and not something that is written into the rules of the game.

I think the realisation the with slomo replays of the Chinese lassies face being squished by Stevensons foot being beamed around the world their future Olympic participation was hanging by a thread.
I think it was in the rules of the game, I just think everyone was of the general opinion it was never going to happen...

Gordon  - Thats not what I was saying. I doubt there were any Paps anywhere. I just think that the technology is there to allow great coverage without ribs running all over the race track

nothing will ever touch boxing for the sheer blatantness of the cheating that goes on.... if sailing gets even 5% of the way towards boxings current lowliness then I shall be off, and I bet most others on this forum too... as for the coverage and camera technology, well of course they go film from further away, but then ISAF would probably make them have bigger logo's on everything (or be forced to) and then we'd have a cycling type situation where the riders are basically walking advertising hoardings as well as their bikes, the support vehicles, supporters etc....

Still believe that if you put apprentice IJ/IUs at the wheel of the camera boats you would go a long way to solving the problem - because:

1 they are trained in close quarter work - the norm when umpiring is that you are as far from the boats as they are themselves

2 if they get it wrong they can kiss goodbye to their career as international race officials

Gordon

PS Can I volunteer to drive a camera boat i Weymouth!

In athletics an athlete may submit a protest (within a fairly tight time limit) and that protest will be heard by a protest committee.  The time limit is there so the competitor can either continue the competition, or the competition be reheld.  In field events the athlete is usually allowed another trial, then the event reviewed afterwards, so the competition can continue.
the same, but different...
