It is the mindset to look for improvement and embrace technology. Boats have changed because the technology has existed. Running races is unchanged in many areas not because the technology doesn’t exist but because people are unwilling to change, taking and handful of people to run a race the same way as they would for a national championship as they do for the handful racing. |

As PRO of quite a high profile single class west country sailing week of a class that Dougal is familiar, I can assure you that no automated system will ever provide the quality of cake that is provided by the carefully selected race team ...

Or maybe carbon, epoxy and Mylar make boats faster. So far, I've failed to be convinced that computers make the ROs job easier, faster or more enjoyable. That doesn't mean my mindset is wrong, it means I cant see the point in making something harder, slower and less fun just so it is modern. |

I suppose it depends if you sail at a 'Last of the summer wine' club or a 'Next generation' club, I am 'tech savvy' and use it all week, nice to leave it at the weekend, 'Swallows and Amazons' forever.

I live and breathe IT technology & software - its what I have been doing for the last million or so years and have the scars to prove it ;-) , and so am curious as to whether the 'harder, slower, less fun' is a perception, feeling or a reality? If reality, then what specifically is wrong - so that it can be fed back to the developers to be made easier, faster, more fun? Technology is meant to 'enable' not 'disable'. I am genuinely curious.

Of the hotel/light starting systems and the results systems that I have seen, they tend to be designed by geeks (no disrespect intended) and have bits bolted on to them when someone says “wouldn’t it be great if it could do this” making it clunky and cumbersome.
The worst aspect is that the systems tend to confine the race team to the comfort of the race box and make them less willing to finish or start races from a committee boat.

There is certainly perception involved - I'm sure some of the systems are better than those I've seen. But a pencil, paper and stopwatch is very simple. As soon as there is a keyboard, scrolling, databases, wifi, whatever else involved, suddenly there is also anxiety, a feeling that if something goes wrong, it needs back up to solve the problem. It will take longer than scribbling some names and times on a piece of paper. It does take more skill than a pencil. Yes, I understand that it helps enormously post race, that some poor sod doesn't have to type everything in, that my dream of every club sending returns comes closer but I cant see it reducing RO numbers without other major changes and I cant see it being more accurate. |

Well, I live breathe and work IT tech too, but whenever I have tried to bring IT to finishing races it has caused me stress and difficulties. Of course a lot of those are prototype difficulties and could be ironed out with sufficient development, but a lot more are to do with an exceedingly difficult environment for commodity hardware and the difficulties of rapidly switching from looking at screens at a very short distance to looking at boats long distance with bright sunlight involved. CCTV and bringing everything to a display could help now I think of it, but that's another jump in complexity.

Does speech to spreadsheet exist?
If I could read out a boat number and time, and have finish times automatically be entered into sailwave or similad, that would certainly be labour saving. Leaving aside teething issues such as accents and mumbling, would that be possible? Do a back up recording just in case. |
