Was it now. Well, don't fear, there have been one or two perfectly adequate replacement members.

After a gap of 20yrs, I returned to dinghy sailing at the beginning of last year. 20+ years ago, I would sail every weekend, either at the club or at various Opens. Sailing was my life and what I did at weekends. It was corinthian and everyone mucked in.
Fast Forward to now and my time and availability and what I want out of sailing has changed, and I suspect I am not alone. I joined a club last year on the South Coast. Pretty much all it does is race at weekends when the tide is available. The bar was rarely open, and even if it was, it was only after the racing. No good for families at lunchtimes if their other half is out on the water in the afternoon. The club had stopped being a "DESTINATION" for friends and families. This wasnt what I wanted out of a club anymore. I want to be able to go to the club of a lunchtime, have a few beers, socialise and have my partner with me. I may go sailing sometimes, and sometimes I may not. My time is now too precious and loaded with other constraints, that I cannot devote the amount of time I used to in the 70's and 80's and 90's. So I changed clubs this year. To one where the bar is always open, the food is always served, racing if you want it, leisure sailing also if you want (now my preferred mode). You are encouraged to help in duties, but it is not mandated. The reality is, clubs now need to be a "destination". Serve good food, have a bar, entice people to come and socialise. Dont force the racing program, but encourage sailing as a leisure activity - not everyone wants to race .... and frankly, racing can scare a lot of people off. All of that may mean clubs may need to amalgamate, or change, or carry on as they are with the inevitable downward slide. Times have changed and clubs and established sailors will also need to change to accomodate |

There's a danger of confusing "times have changed" with "I have changed" and I don't agree with your "own size fits all" message. Some people want a full-service professionally run club and are prepared to pay for that. It doesn't come cheap. Others want something where everyone is expected to muck in, or they just can't or don't want to pay the price for a professionally run club.

I agree with you in part Blueboy, but the topic is about the future of Sailing Clubs, how membership and sailors have diminished, how sailing as a sport will need to change. Whilst my own type of participation in sailing has changed, I dont think I am alone, and that was the point I was making - make your club a "destination" to go to - not just somewhere to store the boat and go racing. It is not the only solution, but I believe it is part of the overall jigsaw puzzle.

There's doaens of places offering to sell me food or beer, dozens of others offering various forms of family amusement. Limited competition in places that will offer me dinghy racing.

I'm sure there's a role for clubs that offer a wider social side to those who don't race - and in particular for those who want to sail other than to race. But the danger is that the club can end up being run primarily for the social side and not the sailing. At which point it stops really being a sailing club. I'm sure some clubs manage the balancing act and manage to provide a bar and food and the chance to sail when you want, as well as a more regular sailing program, but it's really only an option open to clubs of a fair size, with a clubhouse in a good location - and I suspect it needs some serious thinking by the senior officers to keep the balance right. There's a club near me that seems to manage it, though I'm not a member since the club at the end of my road suits me well. If the distance issue was different I suspect I would join, and I'd probably enjoy being a member.

I understand there have been cases in the US where a club with a majority of social members has voted to evict the nasty sailors in order to get a bigger car park and more space for the social activities. |
