if it's priced like the D1 you might need to buy your family matching jackets and hats to ensure they are 'onboard with it' when you announce you've bought one

If it's priced like d-one then it's missed the opportunity...

How are you benchmarking the price? I'd say the D-one looks reasonable value ... if you look at it compared to some products of inferior manufacture and of a similar price ... or another similar quality single hander ... Plus of course you have to look at the prospective resale value. People often focus too much on the entry price and not the total cost of ownership ...

In the absence of IT-industry style maintenance contract, I'd say the 'entry-price' is the largest single cost in the TCO equation

Yep it don't matter if the depreciation is small if you can't afford it in the first lace. That said a d1 is probably about the same price as a fully kitted out phantom and it's got extras like a spinnaker and wings. Not bad in comparison but the price probably means that sailing is slowly drifting towards the well off again rather than being accessible to the masses as it was when the mirror came out and later when the laser first appeared

Just seen the videos. The freeboard looks uncomfortably low, which I thought was always one of the reasons why the Laser was so uncomfortable. Well at least for us larger folk.

Not in my experience- it's about depreciation- 2k acceptable, 1k per annum optimal. But then I appreciate that's fairly unique to play so fast and lose with these toys... and that's all they are before anyone gets too emotional. But there are some folks who have been really burnt on SMODs... My 600 was picked up for feck all, all thanks to RS bringing out the 700!!! Oddly enough the 7's crashed in price too... Bad run if you didn't switch brand when trading in the kiteless version 10 or so years ago.... Edited by yellowwelly - 14 Feb 14 at 10:38pm |

Comparitive to many Dinghies out there a D-one is very good value for what you get and truly is a quality product, well its impressed me. Any one who has sailed one will understand. But a 600 now that's bang for your buck and highly recommended as a fun thing, brilliant boat! Although you could buy 10 6's for the price of many new dinghies!
If you want to moan about value and depreciation

I think the D-one will get increasingly popular. For me there are 2 types of depreciation, Quality and Financial. A new D-one is c.a. 14,500 euros but you can get them for about 8,000. For most of us we would be happy to sail the budget version, could you say that about a laser?
Mirrors Slooow's sports cars again!

If you're buying a new boat then you want quality look at ovi's, devoti's and winder's reputations in classes with open builders. RS/Laser/Hartley etc have much more questionable reputations are consequently much high depreciation.
