Much easier to use kicker and Cunningham anyway.  This underweight thing is so often made by the less experienced.  Many high performance boats are overpowered from force 3 up, if you are light you just start flattening that main at a lower wind speed.  The only time weight is an advantage is when you are on a tight 3 sail reach, the rest of the time its a problem.  I would say however that if you are less than about 160kg combined you would do better in a boat a little less powerful than a 5oh, try a 470.  Better still try a boat with weight equalisation like a 4000.

The last skiff I raced on was this boat.  Australia Day Marathon on Botany Bay.  Ed and I were the first boat home at that club with the boat up on the beach and a beer puchased at the bar whilst we watch the 2nd 14 come home.  Great race and wish to return the favour to Ed when I get the Capricorn on the water.  We hooked up with each other for the regatta after meeting on Sailing Anarchy.com

well quite a few do, but the trend is switchin the way ive gone slightly, twins and centre of the boom sheetin that runs to the back, just like a 49er/18fter, much better for freedom of movement in the boat!! dunno if thats wot u meant but thats wot we have set up

Sorry, but Max speeds are not usually accurate !

I've seen Max of 24 kts on my GPS, but the plots were only showing around 18kts for any given distance.  We are running a ad-hoc competition on Catsasilor.com and the rules are that you must have a plot (and so average speed) over at least 10 seconds to qualify.

The problem with GPS is that the public band is only accurate to 40 meters (unless you pay the US army loads of money or get a cracked unit).  When Gallilao goes online in a few months its free service is accurate to about 40cm, and so would be far better for instantanious speeds.  Simon is right about the accuracy of 10 second+ plots, but it does look cool to be able to say you've hit 22 knots!!
