The Icon is faster than an Albacore? Good god, it must be keeping up with the foiling Moths...

I do think it would be a fantastic idea from now on to base all handicaps, including those for boats that weren't there ("well, it must be faster than a so-and-so") on the results of the Y&YFOM.

Amazing 1st post from reallywavey, there - I think we have someone ready to take on the mantle of falling for everything that is said on here. Go for it, Grumph...

what do we want ... ?   Not our call to set serious numbers and should not be..... Burghfield has a lot of data now and other clubs are now accumulating info as well.  It is up to them and in time the RYA if the PN system/ method is still in place.   All we have done is monitor the data recorded by others and see how it works out compared to our original assessment (guesstimate) of 1020 based on how it performs against 'known' classes over time.

The sample needs to be larger of course - we have full data on only about 100 and something handicap races involving Icons now but it is a good start.  It is my belief when enough data (rather than opinion) is available and Icon is allocated something a bit more formal it will be within spitting distance of 1020....  (would still be exceptional for a 2-sail, 2 crew hiker)

So certainly not as fast a good modern Merlin with a reasonable crew around the course overall but not too shabby at all if they falter or the course is more 'reachy' than 'runny'.  But faster for sure than a Tasar....  in aggregate.  In the lighter stuff Phantoms can beat us but when the breeze cuts in we tend to light the afterburners ... if it gets really breezy (and I mean really breezy) the high wind specialists can in turn wind us in.

In danger of getting serious again. ....
I think I am still worried about Rodney's new "old bus"being up the exhaust pipe of the icon ..... Rodney has been around a while in Finns and is (privately) coached by the squaddies
, therefore he is The benchmark and the icon has to be 1058.
All FORUM members should to race off the RRW handicap. the Rodney's Real World handicapping system. Handicaps will be +/- R (being Rodney's rating/results as taken at the annual FOM when compared to a representative fleet of graduates, fireflys, minisails and miracles) and will be decided by an expert panel consisting of GRF, as he is the unbiased font of all handicapping knowledge.

Could be the start of a new world wide standard in racing. However with slight financial input from Rodders to support the "panel" all events will be won by Finns, D-ones and Icons, but is this a bad thing ? Clap

All right I take the point  .... Being of sensitive natures I tend to think The Dancing Farmer and me are best left in blissful ignorance then.

.... and besides we don't want 'Andy' (Dancing farmer) getting wound all up again  .... first we'd have the dancing, then the mumbling into the bottom of the n'th empty 'orange' glass and then he might even get hold of the combine keys again .. no believe me we really don't want to go there ... and he even carries a chainsaw around Burghfield occasionally just for fun - he even sees it as 'his duty' bless him.

He's really is another sailor you really should not make angry !

The icon looked very quick once there was a bit of breeze- it didn't take much to make it look pretty handy RTC.
