Rodney et al

Peaky and I sailed Icon a couple of times together .... and we were 'out' of your suggested band by quite  few kg's.  The Icon acceleration was a lot less apparent but we did have a lot of fun all the same ... we did not need to de-power' very much btw  ;-)  but were still reasonably competitive.

I'm 80 ish kg and ... Peaky is er ... a little heavier.    When I've sailed occasionally with  04's  regular crew our combined weight is about 130kg ... at the other end of the range and we've also had a great time.. but I have to 'lard it' over the side earlier of course !  Incidentally 130kg is the minimum allowed by the Tasar class, below that and you have to compensate with adjuster weights.  Nah .. interesting idea  but don't think we'll bother with that sort of regulation with Icon at this stage.

PS - If you are 'fast' .. and you point the boat in the wrong direction ... you just get to the 'wrong place' even faster .. Rodders is mostly right on that one !

I look at it that the hull is more forgiving of weight than a 200 and the rig less demanding of weight than a 400. So I think it has a fairly wide. If you are the right size for a 200 or 400 you'd be fine. But the best way to check is to try it!

Not 'set' yet as the class is still very new.  Clubs are tending to use 1020 currently but our belief is that is will end up between 1010 and 1020 in time and as it appears in more formal returns.  The PY system responds to results in developing a PN for a particular class.

It is probably the fastest 2 sail production hiker out there (ie a tad faster than a Tasar) but not as quick as a modern Merlin as some people want to compare it with when a full range of conditions and sailing waters are considered.   Thats still pretty quick though ....

Another test drive another convert, for all the theories posted a test seems to clear the confusion,  planing silently to windward with190kg on board on Saturday was quite an experience. Finn sold!

I'd just like to confirm that you really do NOT have to be 190kg to do it ....  !

What were the conditions ?

The wind was all over the place, going from maybe 7 to 12 mph, we picked up a gust and a shift and away we went, just hit the sweet spot, it was a bit of a surprise to both of us, it was a test sail and thus a bit of a shake down and a mooch round the lake with a potential new owner. The surprise was the silence, no drama, bet we can't do it at the weekend. You are right about the weight, we come in at 155kg and if Steve can go for it they will be about 145kg.

You are right it is a bit 'stealthy' .... dry and very quiet.  Sometimes it does not feel as quick as it is when you are in Icon because of this ...

I did some testing with Rob White and one of his sons and a friend or two  last year.  They were/are really Cat sailors of course and said it had a similar sort of feel albeit without the absolute speed of a Cat.  The other thing they were complimentary about was the acceleration when a gust hits ...  "smooth and rapid" was the general comment  - it is really 'that' bow cuts waves a bit like a multi-hull I guess.

Should be good fun at Broxbourne whatever ... not sure we'll have the waves to demonstrate much in that department ..... but how big is the lake ?   BSC is about 150 acres of usable wet stuff ... what is Broxbourne ?

Planing upwind in 12mph wind, and a handicap on the generous side of 1000?  won't stay there for for long surely

The skill is to keep it there, I look forward to seeing others do it at the weekend consistantly. Lesley and I are at the stage of being very hit and miss in the speed department, it is a big learning curve from the Swordfish and Finn respectively, the are both boats that lack step changes in speed, the Icon you hit a quantum leap and the more skilled will stay there, but I think time on the water counts for a great deal in all boats but here especially.
