I let them tease me about my parsimonious approach to motoring Craiggo... small victories for them masking bigger wins in the toys game for me with things that float on water and snow...
As for tax rants ... I pay corp, income, employer NI, employee NI, benefit on a fuel card, VAT on the toys - nothing ‘above the line’ in narcissistic sponsorship etc. And that’s just the ones I know about and see on an everyday basis... but I don’t whinge or moan, and feel privileged to be able to contribute. So yes, my own personal bugbear is corporate and elite tax avoidance rather the Government plugging fiscal gaps with fuel and stamp duty (annoying as they are). Aggressive tax avoidance is the root of all ill when it comes to what the Government should have to spend on a responsible 21st century programme of social democracy. We are well off sailing as a subject here, but what the hell... When I was a young, doing my accountancy training, one of the tax department's big concerns was that HMRC might challenge the transfer pricing between on and off shore companies in the same group. If HMRC deemed the business was profit shifting simply to reduce its UK tax bill, it would challenge that, 'assess' a 'fair' transfer price and levy tax and penalties accordingly. Somewhere, that has been lost, so Google, Apple, Facebook, M**rosoft, Amazon, Starbucks et al seem to manage to generate huge turnover in the UK, none of which is profitable, even though the group internationally is. Clearly this is total humbug. It is also totally unfair competition for a solely UK based business and damages the UK economy. We also are still supposed to have an accounting principle of 'substance over form' (i.e. cut thru the weaselling) that flies out of the window for the multinationals (I'm having to resist a pop at the big-4 audit firms and their oligopoly here) Reactivate these two principles and the playing field gets re-levelled, the tax burden gets spread more fairly. Mind you, iGRF and I could also cut public spending by at least 10% in about a fortnight. Apply all that and we'd all have to pay less tax and have more money to spend on boats, sails, coaching (books!) and kit. Yay, I knew I could pull it back to sailing.

The one sport where I would have immediately thought that the ground swell of support for a environmentally conscious transport future would be inherent, I would have thought, would be sailing. I'm drawn to it precisely 'because' of its use of the natural elements as a form of propulsion. But from what I can see here I've read the landscape completely wrong. Or have I?

Well to link Fab100 and Jack, Naomi Klein was on desert island discs this morning... a major influence in my own awakening to the ill intent of globalisation. Also talking about environmental issues ... I will buy her latest book after hearing her talk on the subject.

So am I, but perhaps because of that, my view of the direction of travel (sorry) towards environmentally conscious transport is that it is misguided. Misguided because the electricity for battery operated cars is still mostly going to come from hydro-carbons for the foreseeable future. Misguided because no economy has the electricity generating capacity to power everyone's vehicles. Misguided because no one has yet come up with a truly decent* battery technology or solar power array. Misguided because wind-farms^ are a flippin' awful idea when there is no easy way to store the output and also, when the country needs energy most, winter and summer, that weather usually coincides with their being no wind. Misleading because, if we did all switch to electric cars, the government would have to find a way to tax that energy usage to generate the same revenue as it does today from petrol and diesel. Not sure a land-yacht would get me up the hill on the way to Frensham though. * which I would define as giving a max 4 year cost payback (not 15-20 years) without any subsidies and does not scar the earth thru industrial mining of rare materials ^ Windfarms that, through inflated energy prices and subsidies transfer wealth from the poor to the land-owning rich. And chop up birds, bats etc and are also blots on the landscape. I'll further bet that, when they become recognised irrelevancies their operators will be special-pleading for subsidies to take them down and dispose of them.

It is pretty funny listening to someone with an electric car tell you how green they are because all their electricity comes from renewables. In their mind the grid has a special cable to their house with only green energy flowing. Obviously when the wind is not blowing in their part of the country there is another wind turbine creating their energy 500 miles way with no transmission losses.
