My 3p worth as an ex owner of Blaze's.

Don't worry too much about the condition of your first Blaze sail, it's worth upgrading after you've sailed it for a couple of months (or many depending on how often you get out).  The semi battened sails last a long time and even a really worn rag is good enough for a laugh in F4 or more.

Do pay attention to the slot gasket underneath and mast step & foot.  The slot gasket is easy enough to sort and there's plenty of tips about - having a loose one or crappy condition will be like chucking an anchor over the back.   If the boat's been abandoned most likely it has a tin mast, since sailing them with very loose shrouds some have well-worn mast foots/steps, just check you're getting a good fit to avoid any jumpiness when gybing in fresher/windy conditions.

Thanks getafix will check those bits carefully. The boat is from 2002 and I believe it has had very little use though (the last  owner bought it in 2006, never raced it just pottered/blasted up and down and has not sailed it at all for the last 3-4 years), under the grime it looks as if the hull is almost pristine. The issues are with UV damage and muck from settled rainwater as the cover deteriorated (it has been shredded for the last year at least). I'll give it a clean and re-rope this weekend so I can see what I have.

All these newer boats seem like a lot of cash to not race seriously.
If you are small and agile enough for an older Moth, it looks like cheap fun and a light wind weapon.
If where you sail is suitable, RS600 or MPS!

I know this is an old post, but how easy, in practice, is it to shorten the leach? I am having a similar problem getting under the boom, and instead of a different boat (streaker, solo, lightning 368).Perhaps this is a viable alternative?

I have a spare sail on my Europe.

Harder on a sail with a stretchy bolt rope on the boom than with a loose footed sail, but any decent sail maker should be able to do it.
