To plane upwind I think you really need a trapeze boat ...
As the obvious alternative and in this Blaze racers fully agree with Red Bull of course .. "you really do need wings" ![]() |

At least the Blaze really does have wings, so you needn't worry about being taken to sued!

On open water and in decent breeze they do plane upwind and to great effect. Sometimes you would crack off a bit, take off but find that your effective course was little lower that the stuffers ? - more lift off the foils ? VMG was much better. It takes proper breeze though |

And will almost never work on a small lake as there will be far too many lifts that the people pointing higher will pick up and tack onwhile the others plane off into oblivion.

Can I just shut this planing upwind bullsh*t down, nothing planes up wind in the true sense if it is still running with the plate down.
If you were running up wind off the rudder alone I might accept it, but seriously get a life will you all, what you do in dinghies, upwind, is not called planing, not if what we do on sail and kiteboards is called planing.. So stop saying it please, you all make yourselves look like eejiots to those of us who actually do plane upwind.. |

What kind of angles to true can you achieve on a planing sailboard? Interested to see how it compares to the angles of a high performance dinghy
Some dinghies will plane upwind, if we are defining planing as what a sailboard can do not a racing powerboat, most will never actually experience it though, if they did they would realise what they thought was planing upwind was nowhere near

It is not the definition of 'planing' that is the problem but the definition of 'upwind'.

18ft Skiff, 49er, 505, 470 ..... These all exceed hull speed when on the windward leg of courses and get there faster than pointing higher and sailing at displacement speed ? |

What is missing in that statement is a qualification as to windstrength. A Laser 4.7 would be faster upwind than a standard Laser if my clone and I were sailing them in a F.5-6: upwind the lower centre of effort of the small rig would mean I'd have more thrust for my limited righting moment; off wind I'd capsize less! Equally, I'd be more likely to plane upwind in a smaller rigged Aero with that lower c.of.e, I'd just need more wind to get the maximum thrust out of the smaller rig. In a F.2 the bigger rig would be quicker on all points. So yes, I can believe that an Aero 5 can beat a Laser if there is sufficient wind to get the helmsman fully hiking upwind and planing downwind, but in a F.2 the 5 will be slaughtered, I imagine, and indeed calculate. Wind band PY discussion, anyone? Thought not! |
