If you release the pole then its inner end is pulled up the mast by a shock cord. They are brilliant.....but not allowed on Tasar.

out of interest, can they be paired with a self tacking jib, and would the combination make single handing easier?

I see no reason why not. I have crewed Ent and Grad with them. To gain full advantage you play jib sheet and stick line together but if you had the sick cleat within reach of the helm you could use it to goosewing.

Yup, twin danglies... might have to come up with a better name for them! The string problem is one I'll leave the Great Innovator to solve.

At least i can gybe a kite and not moan like a girl about it.  Tongue i still dont get what your trying to achieve, apart from some dodgey kite that wont do much of anything and poles and string everywhere. if you dont like gybing stick with the original icon rig.
Or take these daily and learn to gybe. must be difficult knowing a washerwoman can gybe a kite but the brilliance that is GRF finds it "stressful"

Ideas thick and fast now........how about a dangly starting at the forestay and pointing back. Deploy the pole and sheet the kite back (assy) let it go out sideways (sym). When gybing the pole runs up the forestay as the kite goes round and you deploy it again on the other side!

Shoot that one down Rupert if you can!!!

I can see why a washerwoman would want man up capsules..

But frankly would be better off with these

They should be standard issue in the B14 fleet.

Kites get stressed being dragged around the forestay, we've trashed two this year so far, you're welcome to come down to Hythe and see if we can gybe or not, or maybe join your fellow B14er, Dumberer examining the bottom of his Hornet as we gybe round her.

I'd thought about that one funnily enough, but didn't think anyone would take it seriously.

Will not work, fore stays should be slack and rig tension set on jib luff. If you were to put enough tension on the forestay, to keep control, you would have issues with pointing, unless, you alter rig tension, up and downwind, adding even more complexity into the system.....

Kites do get trashed and do cost a lot - one reason your Icon doesn't have one ;-)
I still reckon a well cut assy about 29er/700 size is your best bet. But then I don't like string and can't follow your plans with a picture...

Jimbo, I think the K1 has a dangly pole on a self tacking set up.

I'm not sure that the dangly pole needs an awful lot of tension on the line it runs on to work. Its not as if there are that huge loads on the pole most of the time.
