Seems like you Icon boys are already losing the 'one man, one sail' faith...

When was 'faith' of any kind involved ?  ... It is bravardo, showing-off, even lack of crew, (We picked it up from those N12 types btw).. call it fun if you like when all the 'old lags' are 'tut-tutting'  in their over-weight, draggy, so 'last century' rides ....  Wink  You are always welcome to try 2 .. or 3 sails against us on your own if you must  in your 400 ... just don't bet to much beer against us though !

Singlehanding is not something the RS400 excels at. The controls for the three sails are not the problem, so much as not being able to move forwards easily due to the hoop.
Also the crew does do the important job in light weather of spotting the mooring buoys that attack you in the cross tide.

Well ... just sail with two sails and junk the hoop !  You simply would not need it ... I always think it
was really put there as some sort of 400 helm 'security blanket' ... you know something to grasp onto when it all goes wrong .. and the rest of the time to keep the crew off them when they 'get all nasty' ...

Also get rid of that extra sail up front .. and start seeing where the **** you are going (or as likely who you are about to hit !).  Get rid of that pointy pole thing for the spinnaker while you are at it - another bit for metal reclaim and get the boat on the diet it really needs ....

Or try an Icon and see what is really possible.  You probably will not but the offer is there ... Wink

Excellent Mike!  This forum's been missing some 'spicy replies' of late.

I've always loved the 400, but apart from being a two person sitty down boat, I really can't see where the 'competition' sits with the Icon.  I know the 400 isn't something I could consider as an occasional single hander, and definitely wouldn't suit me and a little one up front.

I see the Icon competing very much with the N12, in a not too dissimilar way to how the 400 gave the Merlin a good run for its money... quite literally.

When I sailed Oppys we were always poached by N12 sailors for the front end- especially in light winds.  The Icon could do something similar- in a more accessible package for kids who don't just sail week in, week out and for adults who would prefer a simpler set up boat.

Totally agree .. we do not see Icon as being in the 400 market in any way ..... or ever ! LOL  We just like to tease '400' ...   but this is not exactly 'sailing anarchy' stuff.

I do not however think N12s are a direct alternative to Icon either - or the other way round.  Modern 12's are way too 'technical' with all that weed collecting equipment bolted underwater.  You are right generally about 2 sail classes grabbing scratch crews though - somthing that used to be one of the main routes into mainstream racing for many in past decades.   Yes we do this as well but arguably with a more modern and crew weight 'friendly' package.  It is much more difficult to do this with a powerful asymetric class and Icon may have more in common perhaps with the Tasars and traditonal Fireflys or Enterprises ...

Mike L.  .... ask and you can try one too !

The Merlin at the time was a very expensive option, maybe boats like the 400 influenced the Merlins into the way there are now, with a default 'one design option' in the shape of the Winder. How much would a Jon Turner wood hull be now?

I feel 12's have gone done a potential expensive cul de sac with t foils, but we have some weed they can clear for us. For me a 12 would only be credible as a single hander, it would be cruel to put both our weight into a poor little boat like that.

People will look at the 400 and the Icon when considering what to buy - we can see from the What Boat threads that people look at a great variety of boats to find one to suit - whether it has a rag to wash out the front or not. I can see people looking at 400, Icon, Merlin and Applecore as possible boats to sail.

Two Icons ventured south west to Falmouth last week. http://results.falmouthweek.co.uk/2013/results/Dinghy.htm

Mike L lent '03' to a Burghfield Enterprise sailor who seemed to get the hang of it annoyingly quickly - aided by tips from 'coach Mike' who was sailing a Blaze.

For me it was the first time sailing the boat with Mrs B in strongish winds.  We're probably a bit underweight for it (140ish Kg) so were a bit overpowered upwind, but offwind it was great.  On the harbour race we encountered a few lumpy bits which it seemed to carve through with ease and was remarkably dry.

So as the boat's still packed up we're off to Poole on Saturday.........

Underweight at 140 kg ... I feared that this would be the case.
